Some people are giving this guy way too much credit. They're also focusing too much on the cables, most of which are useless and designed for the media to munch on. People are forgetting there's real crimes involved in a lot of the leaks and not just the recent ones.

I don't see any problem with the media focus on it. Let the leaks keep coming.
- I'm talking about the diplomatic cables not the important leaks. The media focus is taking away from real issuesDodecahedron

even if something terrible is released, what are the odds anyone (americans) will react to it?
you can give us all the information in the world, but it doesn't mean shit unless we do something about it.
- none,
but touch them and it's all DON'T INFRINGE ON MY LIBATIES!!georgesIII - Soldiers killing dozens of civilians is not terrible enough?Dodecahedron

One of the things they talk about in that video on the last page is the "censored websites" list the Australian government has now, which apparently it's illegal to talk about in Australia. Doesn't that seem like a ridiculously over the top thing to do in a "free" society? What's the rationale for it in the first place?
- the rational is that Australia is sliding down a slippery slope with the USDodecahedron
- The U.S. however, hasn't so far gone to such extremes as blocking a site.abettertomorrow
- The Australians seem to be in the same category as the Chinese in this regardabettertomorrow
- I guess I'm wondering how Australian politicians even justify such mattersabettertomorrow
- USA hasn't banned it they're just totally black listing it... subtle differenceDodecahedron
- U.S. has taken down some sites that were engaged in bootlegging stuff, Australia will actually block sites for simply political reasonsabettertomorrow
- political reasons.abettertomorrow
- I understand yet US are behind the DoS attacks and are banning gov employees from it and warning people etcDodecahedron

Of course, the huge irony in all this is that the government demands access to all of our communications. If they wanted to, the government could read all your e-mail, credit card transactions, and other personal info. Yet they scream execution and treason when similar info is revealed about themselves.

"Yet they scream execution and treason when similar info is revealed about themselves."
That's called the monopoly of state power on violence. The State assumes it has the sole right to use violence, and it's generally inferred that people, in democracies, have granted their assent to this to allow for an ordered functioning society. What people forget is that "State violence" is more than just the Gestapo knocking on your door at 3am. It's also the use of systemic & economic means of control. Their is Economic violence (locking you out of different types of employment, locking you into an income class with no means of moving from it) and systemic violence. These also operate on simply the threat level as well and not just in action. You get threatened with attacks to your livelihood or means to move about freely for example. And we're seeing these so called "democratic" states in the Western World utilize these things more and more to larger extremes.
Of course I mention this in the Politics thread and the resident teabaggers call me a pussy commie or something, and post pics of Obama in joker makeup. Whatever. It means the terrorists have won, and probably did so in or about 2003. It's all a long slow slide down from here.
I see wikileaks as a last grasp attempt to point out this systemic takeover to anyone that will pay attention. Fat chance.

Chomsky said that government secrecy is used to protect itself from it's own citizens. I thought that was an interesting view.

Also, it seems to be affecting diplomatic relations, at least for now:
"MANAMA, Bahrain—U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tried to speak with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki twice on Friday, pursuing him both inside and outside the gala dinner here at the Ritz Carlton in Manama. But Mottaki deliberately avoided contact with her both times."

One thing that's occurred to me today while talking to a friend of mine about this, is that all this DDOS/freezing funds/censorship etc etc, might be primarily due to the fact that their next big release of info is apparently about banks (or 'a' bank) ...and the word on the street is that it's Citi Bank.....atleast that's what I've heard..(pardons if this has already been mentioned here)
now, the likelyhood is that if it's Citibank, and that if there's some serious dirty laundry in there, (ie, admissions that they and other banks were in collusion about the recent recession, or that they helped bring it on, or that they unduly profited off the backs of the poor or that they were acting like Enron etc etc) then it's entirely likely that the shit will hit the fan....and if they're in trouble then it domino's to places like the middle east (1 country in particular that owns like, 30% of CitiBank) which could mean a huge rise in oil prices, which ...well...the idea being that the domino effect could be massive....
which leaves me wondering what's worse...
the fact that a small cartel of a few huge banks can 'at will' create depressions and recessions which allow them to swallow up smaller banks and competition whilst ruining the lives of millions...
or a world wide panic on banking in general that threatens everyone...
i'm all for wikileaks, and find this whole thing insanely illuminating about the state of the world we live in, but just wondering how terrible the fallout could possibly be....
- I read it is Bank of AmericaBusterBoy
- that might make things a bit better, internationally speaking...

Just an idea, I could be completely wrong, but maybe Assange is getting all of his resources himself from hacking?
- abettertomorrow0
^ I was thinking the same. Did you watch the video on the previous page? They talk about how he hacked into the Pentagon computers as a teenager

Looks like the end is nigh. David Cameron will ship him over to Sweden where he can be tried and convicted for not wearing a condom.
