3d models to paper nets

  Im looking into creating some paper toys.
  In the past I spoke to some 3d guys who used a plugin to create a 3d model then unfold it into a paper net that could be cut out and stuck together...

  did they use a plugin? I dont know...
  does anyone know of said plugin that could do such a thing?
