And they will pronounce it Ah Keee Ra and not Ah key Ra.
America sucks.

could they not have put the money towards creating an animated prequel? or heck, perhaps a new movie altogether? I'm sick of these so called homages/adaptations – what the hell happened to original ideas? Have we hit a slump?

this still sucks.
the script sucks.
and james franco is fucking too old to play any of the street kids.there is that slight chance that an Akira live action film could work -- but you'd need an out-of-field genius director/writer behind it -- not some hollywood schmuck.
- Wouldn't call the Hughes brothers shmucks, tho. They've made good movies. They've just tasked themselves w/ the impossible, & have made themselves enemies of geekdom forevere.Remixt

Leave it alone. Why are all these actors everyone is suggesting Amercian... stop ruining everything, Hollywood is just awful.

A Takashi Miike-directed version could work with all Japanese actors set in Tokyo, otherwise it is shit.

You know they're going to ruin the soundtrack too. The orignal OST is a classic, in my opinion.
- yeah, superb!OBBTKN
- +1. It's up there with the Bladerunner soundtrack. All time great. No doubt they'll fuck this up as well.inteliboy

Hope this fucking flops and puts them off the inevitable Ghost in the Shell remake.

Ugh - i just read they offered the roll of Kaneda to Brad Pitt. Are you fucking kidding me?? Kaneda is 16 years old - not fucking 40 something. And fucking pakistani new york gangs? What is that shit?
I normally don't care for such nonsense, but Akira (the manga) is rightfully regarded as a masterwork - this is is like making the hobbits normal size and setting ait in the wild west.

Jesus tittyfucking Christ. Look, no matter what happens, IT IS GOING TO BE SHIT.
Obviously the studio bean counters decided to remake it, there's no way it's going to live up to anybody's expectations so get over the fact that it's probably going to be worse than Transformers and get on with your lives.
- I like this thread for appreciating the original, the movie will be ok at best. Nothing will ever be as good as the cartoon.PhanLo

Someone needs to start a 'boycott Akira live action movie' group.
if Everyone in the worlds agrees to avoid this shit maybe it will fail so bad people will realize not to mess with something already amazing.
But sadly the general masses will see any bullshit at the cinema these days.

The story takes place in the rebuilt New Manhattan where a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. There are two major roles, and I’m told that for Tetsuo, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been given the new script. For the role of Kaneda, the script has been given to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix. The two leads are expected to come from that group of actors.- justin timberlake...hans_glib

You have to hand it to the director, that is the worst list anyone could have imagined.
Michael Fassbender playing a teenager? Justin Timberlake? Joaquin Phoenix? So fat he'd fall off the bike.

Keanu Reeves to Star in Akira?
Keanu Reeves may be getting ready to take a trip to New Manhattan, the setting for the American, live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga, Akira. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, claiming Reeves has been meeting with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures and, while there's no offer, the Matrix star seems to be the current frontrunner for the lead.
To be directed by Albert Hughes, Akira was famously adapted as an anime film in 1988. Reeves would potentially play the role of Kaneda, a member of a biker gang in a cyberpunk dystopia.
Reeves will next appear in 47 Ronin, hitting theaters on November 21, 2012. He also recently revealed that he will return for a third Bill & Ted film at some point in the not-too-distant future.
