excuse my noobishness, I normally do work for web and its been a long time since I actually sent work to the printers myself...
I am updating my GF's business cards and last time the printer mentioned that the black wasnt black enough...
What is the best way to achieve the blackest black I can get?
set all the CMYK values to max?
- Miguex0
CMYK value to:
75 Cyan
40 Magenta
40 Yellow
100 Black
- maquito0
No. add 60% only cyan to the 100% black.

60-40-40-100 is what i was taught.

Ask your printer what their screen mix for rich black is. It's different for different printers. Also be aware that you will now be paying for a 4-color business card, ouch!

I guess the best way to achieve what you are looking for (like with everything in print) is talk to the printer that will do the job, and consult these things to match their specifications.

I do this:
K: 100+infinity

i worked running a printer for 5+ years. we had all kinds of formulas for making the best black. a lot depended on the substraight and the surrounding colors. we liked it when people gave us the file and told us what they were wanting to accomplish.

- See Mr. Right's comment below.doublespaced
- well- i always appreciated it when people asked me. we usually had to change the designers black anyway.bjladams

make sure to trap your text with 0-0-0-100 if its knocked out of the black.
- easiest way is a duplicate layer of the text with a 0-0-0-100 stroke... 1pt (0.5pt trap) should be tonsinkpink
- you lost me, but I'm curious.
what do you mean?Miguex - for crisp white text on richblack; the thin 100K outline around white text stops the richblack CMY from creeping in.inkpink
- specially if you use 75-40--40-100 ;)inkpink
- hmm interestingCanHazQBN
- .5 point trap is really very big. .25 or below is what I normally do, when I trap. BUT it's usually best to let the printer's RIP handle it.duckofrubber
- handle it.duckofrubber

Let's confuse the OP even more: Ask your printer instead of using a regular black ink to use a "dense black" ink, or maybe "double bump the black plate to make it really black. Or... tell your printer "I want this type to be really fuckin black, make it happen!"
- it might be a joke, but this method of talking to the printer is almost fail-safedoublespaced

I always do 30-30-30-100

tell him that if it fine the way it is.
it's only your girlfriend, not like a client that's gonna complain. She won't even notice
