I was asked to do some designs for my friend'a new t shirt brand.
I think the best way to do it is by send her designs and whatever she picks I can charge for it.
charge by design.
but I dont really know how much...
what u guys think... she is starting she already has like 15 designs printed. and she told me she is very picky haha

soooooo... you ask her out yet?
- honestIy0
whether she prints or not, you should be paid. "if i like them, i'll pay you" are not the words of any friend

You don't go to a restaurant and have them cook you 15 meals and then decide which you would want to pay them for. It should be the same for this situation. Have her figure out what she wants from the start, and then go from there.

beware the friend who wants to start a tshirt brand.
i've been approached by at least 6 or 7 of these. none have followed through.
unfortunately the work arrangement you described is pretty common for tees. but you don't have to agree or do it. at least make sure your ideas are generic and could be sold to anyone, meaning nothing custom for her brand.
in my opinion if you're going to pump out a collection of ideas without any guaranteed payment, might as well print and sell your own, or try other outlets like threadless etc.

yeah totally... I agree with you ^
but so how much should I charge for design? 75? 100? 150? 500?

What I always is do is figure out what my hourly rate should be then estimate how long it will take to do. Can you do a good design in 2 hours? If so and you charged 50$ a hour I would say about 100$. Figure out what your worth is. How much experiance you have and how good your work is.
- not correct. this is illustration, not web design. artwork has reproduction value.horton

It all depends... Are you single? Very good looking? Do you play guitar?

doesnt urbanoutfitters try to strike a deal where they give the artist a fraction of a penny for every shirt they sell.... so your design ends up making them $30k and you get 100bucks.

and remember, the ideas and artwork always remains your property. she is buying rights to print your artwork on her tees. preferable if you specify usage in advance... ie. 500 tees in one year, reprint rights to be negotiated.
you'd be pretty pissed if you designed the BAPE tee and 15 years/ thousands of tees later you've still only seen $300 for your idea.

go over everything. so both of you are on the same page.

Getting paid by approved/ selected t shirt graphic is pretty standard, most big companies work this way. Vans, Burton, FS&S, Etnies, Quicksilver, etc.
And it's really hard to get royalties, you need to be an approved vendor for a couple of years for this to happen, whit lots of used designs, otherwise they do a couple hundred bucks per design. And they will use that on EVERYTHING, hats, shirts, jackets, etc.
pretty crazy actually
