How many designers/art directors here have recently seen or wanted to see photographer's printed portfolios, as opposed to websites?
I'm asking as a photographer who is rebuilding his print portfolio, asking for what you wanted to see, what you didn't see enough of, what you saw too much of.... and/or if you're totally ignoring print books and just looking at websites....
thanks!

also went to this lecture a few weeks ago:
http://blog.noplasticsleeves.com…
the speakers seemed to think that printed portfolios were de rigeur for photographers and they implied that they were always asked for, especially when a photographer is called in for a face-to-face meeting. but, the speakers may be a little fetishistic - they are both art producers (designer and photographer) rather than art buyers.
- yes.. I'd love to hear from younger designers/art directors, not just older art buyers,etc...vaxorcist

One thing people don't talk about the iPad portfolio is the screen glare in some situations it makes it very hard to see the pix...
But... I'm asking about print portfolios, as I'm in the middle of making one, even if it is a bit 20th century...

vax, i'd say size (above 8x10) and range.(color b&w portrait architecture macro) like a website, better to show 10-15 awesome pieces than hide them in a stack of 50 average pieces

iirc http://www.qbn.com/vnarmy/ had something to say on this subject or a related recently, but i can't think of which thread.

Thanks honestly,
My last book was 12x12 square.
Now I'm doing one probably horizontal, but have a few verticals to add....
Option 1: print verticals full-size. force viewer top turn book sideways
Option 2:print 2 verticals side-by side to keep page flipping in harmony with horizontals.... more editing, but probably what I'll do
any feedback on this?

there are those huge portfolio cases so you could have them separated by a nice stock square between your horizontal and vertical shots so as they are flipped through, the paper between each of them serves as a bg not showing a differently oriented behind though i like the idea of the squares, i've always liked square photos with the white border. another thing i've always thought was a very nice touch are though who build their own portfoolio cases, to me it shows a passion for not only the photography itself but also the printed photos.

honestly, are you an art buyer of some sort?
- spent too much time with a gallery curator in LA (she liked my taste in music, i thought she was hot)honestIy
- but alas she wasn't into me :(honestIy
- well, if you were doing it right, technically you'd be into herbigtrick

I know those huge porfolio cases.... seen some that scream big ego, and some that scream great work.....
The square with white border may not work with this series of work, but I've loved it in the past, as I used to shoot lots of square 120 film once upon a time....

vax, i didn't mean the ones that are 3x4 feet, just something large enough to allow for either orientation, hence the handmade suggestion

not ... that.... huge..... but I get the idea
maybe a "two fronts" book....
first half landscape, then flip and second half portrait.... with a nice divider.... like "welcome to the middle of the film"
