Letterhead in word

I have created letterhead for a client that would like it worked into the background of a word document so they can just type on to it.
I seriously hate word and am going to punch my monitor in about 3 seconds. Does anyone have suggests for how to get this done.
I've tried the watermark but I can't position the damn thing properly because the text is set up in a column to the right and the letterhead has image content that is outside of that column.
Any help would be truly appreciated.

double click. find "advance"
- also you have 4 icons. in-front of text, around text, behind text. etc.akrokdesign

insert an image from file into the header on the page, still awkward mind

I couldn't agree more.
I use text boxes to position everything as necessary, which doesn't seem to affect the typing area. I have no idea if this is the best way of doing it but I assume it works as clients have not complained.
Don't forget to remind your client that if any part of your design bleeds off the artwork it won't print on to the edge.

I had to do this last week.
1. Save your letterhead as an 8.5x11 PDF, print quality.
2. in Word, turn on Headers & Footers (so you can see them)
3. Click in the Header space, and Insert Picture from File...
4. Select your PDF, it will appear in the header probably shifted half off the page.
5. Right click and Format Picture... Here you see it to Size/Scale to100% (the default is like 71%), position Behind Text, and the Absolute Position has to be 0cm and 0cm, from Page (I think Margin is the default). You may have to repeat this step a few times because it seems to selectively ignore the absolute position details.
6. Turn off headers (so you can't see them anymore) and save.- <Knuckleberry

I just had to do this for OpenOffice yesterday.
I think my career's on the slide.

Good luck with that...
That letters and e-mails with background signature for outlook are my worst nightmares.

OK, now, how about Quickbooks and all that other crap??
I have a client that is asking me to add the new logo and to make their forms prettier on excel, Quickbooks, etc... any advice on this?

Had to do this shit last week. My career committed suicide and it's back to desktop publishing for me.

holy bejeebus, i_monk,
you just saved me a ton of grief.fucking HATE the fact clients keep asking for Word templates, but this maybe actually work. (They're still going to fuck up the rest of the type setting/fonts/margins, but at least that's not my problem anymore).
- fucking tell me about it! Word is shite, everytime I get a brief with 'client also want a word version' I charge them a fortune and then book myself into therapy!!!!!missus_dita
- ... I book myself in to Therapy!missus_dita

You can add logos/etc to Excel headers and footers. You have to be in a certain View mode, I think, then click in the header or footer, insert image, and format it. It doesn't have a lot of options Word has for controlling that sort of thing.

It's such bullshit that making a Word letterhead—or just placing a full size background image—is so f'in complicated. I use Office applications daily and I will never get over how convoluted they have become and how their attempts to help you really just make for a frustrating experience, day in and day out.

stumped? what are other options...
- monoboy0
- Switch to OpenOffice, better, more stable and its free.monoboy
- Of course you can turn it all off in preferences, but this is so true!monospaced
- Not feasible to go Open. Most people who use Office share files with many others, so they'd all have to switch.monospaced
- ah, so you're stuck with Microshaft Orificevaxorcist

create a canvas to the right size and dpi, edit the header of the word document, drop in the image, set to background and scale to fit page. end of.
- But i_monk used numbered steps and went into more detail. So he gets the squeeze.boobs
