I am putting together recommendations for books for my students. They are just starting their education in graphic design and I would like to give them a list of essential books that articulate standard principles of their theoretical and practical education. Books that they will be able to use for the next 10, 20 years. So far my list is short:
Emil Ruder
TypografieMade you look
Sagmeisterthe art of looking sideways
The Visual Display of Quantitative Information
How to be a grahic designer without losing your soul
22 Tips on typography – Enric Jardi
Thinking with Type
Seems random.
Any Ideas?

it seems like Elements of Typographic Style could actually replace Thinking with Type—the latter is a nice overview but not at all extensive. i would have also suggested Scarier Stories to Tell in the Dark, but everybody's taking this thread very seriously.

Also, I almost wouldn't recommend 'the art of looking sideways', it's very expensive for what it is. I'm not a fan. It's good at raising my monitor height though!
