What's the difference between a condensed font, and a compressed font?

i think condensed is usually designed to look as it does - compressed is just squashed

Condensed is not as wide. Compressed is not as tall.

You mean, not as wide, or not as tall, as the parent font? So condensed are skinny tall letters, and compressed are short and fat?

i have never owned a font with 'compressed' faces - compressed is just distorted afterwards - not designed to appear like that.

Condensed and compressed are basically the same, it‘s just that compressed is usually even more narrow/condensed and often appears to be more bold (smaller counters). Compressed doesn‘t mean that the font is stretched/distorted.
