hi, i have to design a cosmetics line for the african market, a truly mass market product. the client reference is dark&lovely... which is very poor design and not inspiring at all. the client wants to follow the colors and the mood of it. are there any other ethnic references - in the african or afro-american market - that would help me to deconstruct their concept? thanks.

You are designing the line of cosmetics itself? Shouldn't you kind of know everything there is to know about it already?
Or was that a type and you are designing its site or something?
Whatev. Look at Iman, Bobbi Brown, and Carol's Daughter for starters.
- type = typo. I can't speakada english either apparently.harlequino

1. look their competitions. (don't means rip-off, etc)
2. look at the overview (cosmetic brands)
3. know your audience
4. english, french or what? both?
5. any requirement for the market? (are your product making any claims) might not want to break any laws. etc. if any.

Portuguese speaking market can be very different. Not even remotely related to "african" or "african american." Brazilians are some of the largest cosmetics consumers in the world. Research that very carefully.

harlequino : portuguese speaking african countries ( angola, moçambique, cabo verde, guiné-bissau, s.tomé e principe) that´s the market. but you are right brasil is a market to look at, im sure i will find something that is not natural, tropical and expensive. thank you both!
- interesting range. Good luck, would also like to see the outcome.harlequino
