my uncle and aunt have been there a number of times in the last few years - they highly recommend it. say it's a great walking city to get lost in.

Been there. You can do all the major stuff in 3/4 days. Great city though. So diverse.

I had some really smart Turkish students many years ago when I was teaching at an art colllege... wish I'd kept track of them, I'd love to go to Turkey and see people I know, their families,etc...

absolutely brilliant place. great tourist sites and fabulous noisy grubby streets to wander and wonder.
Topkapi Palace, get there early to have the harem to yourself, then do the islam museum full of mohammed's footprints and other curios while some mullah chants from the koran - mad and wonderful
The mosques of course...
The grand bazaar is everything they say, all manner of interesting shops, cafes, workshops if you look hard enough, then wander in the streets outside where the stores sell the raw materials for the bazaar. Haki Bacir for turkish delight (just outside the spice bazaar)
The old roman cistern near the mosques is definitely worth a visit
A boat trip to Asia dodging the huge tankers on their way up the bosphorus
Peri Palace has been restored (was still shut last year) supposed to be a great place for a cocktail. The Zinhan Kebap House Restaurant does great food on a rooftop terrace down by the Golden Horn with views across the ferry port with all it's hustle and bustle
Don't forget to take a crisp £10 note for each traveller as you will need this for a visa when you arrive at the airport
- £10 when you arrive? how it is not payed before?jadrian_uk
- just the way it is. many people get caught outhans_glib

I've never been to Istanbul but I've been to Turkey 4 times and I've loved it every time.

the west cost is amazing if you have the time to bus around for a few nights, north and south not so much.
and don't forget to catch a tram down to the water/river and get bbq fish fresh from the boats (in a roll with onion & tomato).

Sounds awesome, thanks peoples.
