Hi
Whats the going Salary in Canada for a Graphic Designer. I have just under 10 years experience (including university years). I currently live and work in Amsterdam, but have also worked in Australia and NZ.
Help and advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

it greatly depends the city you want to work in (ie: montreal's cost of living is way cheaper than toronto or vancouver therefore salary usually reflects that)
take a look at this national survey :

Toronto > Vancouver, in terms of salary, and the advertising industry.
But you can find a lot of cool stuff going on in Vancouver, albeit smalltime but still good if you get in with a good agency.
There are alot more mobile app development companies in Vancouver, or so I hear that its a major hub for this type of work, but can't really confirm this.

It depend .... can be 29,000K to 65,000K

Also, not to come off as a crum bum, but having x years of experience doesn't really mean anything unless you can explain it through your work.
Just like skiing/boarding for x amount of years and only going once every year.

According to the pdf above
High's $220,000
Low's $0haha

I'm not entirely sure why you would want to leave Amsterdam to go work in Canada, to be honest with you.
For one thing, the salaries are much lower - dollar-for-Euro - in Canada than they are in NL. For another, you're in for a massive shock, vis-à-vis labour laws in Canada; they're much more in favour of the employer to the point of being draconian. Thirdly, if you're thinking you're going to do global brand work here, you're in for a shock. There are only a handful of agencies in Canada who do any sort of stuff for global brands, and they're mostly in Toronto. They're usual suspects: McCann, Leo Burnett, Ogilvy, etc, and it's often straight adaptations of stuff from the US market. For the rest, it's local or national brands no-one outside of Canada has heard of.
I've lived in A'dam and am from Canada, and I would commit unspeakable acts of violence go back and settle in NL, all things considered.
But hey, if you're Hell-bent on it, good luck to you.
- Hmm, thanks, I havnt really thought of living in Canada before, but a pretty good agency might want me to move there.Deks
- < From a guy who lives in Montreal. Hahaha... where did this come from, Philippe?Andrew_D

Tax is crazy here too. All said and done, if you make $100,000 / year, your going to be paying $55,000 - $60,000 to the government easy. The only things that aren't taxed are drugs and native cigarettes!
- What the Hell kind of creative makes 100k in Canada? We're talking ECDs, here, yeah?Continuity
- I was using a round number, but a good freelance designer should be able to gross $100+ if they can sell themselfspot13
- We're not talking freelancers, though, we're talking salaried jobs.Continuity
- ^Continuity
- ok, wtf, if your not able to make 100k then you will still be taxed to fuck, wtf is wrong with you?spot13
- and btw, just so you know, LOTS of creatives make well over 100k / year.spot13
- If you make a 100k you don't pay 55k yr in taxes. hire a good accountant and you'll be fine.polyestercorp

Canada is a great place to live and work, ignore the hate. Take this with a grain of salt, but the Economist rates 3(in the top 5) major Canadian cities as the top places to live in the world:

If you're a top "creative", you can get paid and paid well. I've got similar experience to you, Deks (5+yrs working experience, this is my sixth year out of school) and I'll make $75k this year. It's all what you make it, obviously and where you choose to work.
Montreal is a great city with an awesome nightlife and probably provides the closest to a "European lifestyle" that you'll get in Canada. Amsterdam is awesome, don't get me wrong, but so is Canaduh. ;-)
- "O Canada, we stand on guard for thee...." This is honestly the most patriotic thing I've ever written.Andrew_D

Continuity: "For the rest, it's local or national brands no-one outside of Canada has heard of."
Only global brands are worthwhile? Shit, I've been doing it all wrong!
- Depends on what your career goals are.Continuity
- People who want to take their careers international should probably try to get a couple of global clients under their belt.Continuity
- I'm sure another language might help, I'd suggest Mandarin. ;-)Andrew_D
- Big agencys pay less anyway because people like Continuity will work for less to work on global brandsspot13

In a Senior Design role in Montreal, you'll probably be in the 45-60k range. Which is comfortable there.
