I've been cooking a project for a year, I'm seriously thinking about starting my own magazine it will be a test to see if it works out nicely. I've been doing magazines for many years, most of the local and state wide. I have connections and potential clients. Locally there are a bunch of magazine that are horribly designed and the contents are just way out of context for the market down here. I've been working on the layout, I'll probably finish in a couple of days. I'll let you guys know how worked out.
Any thoughts?

@horton.. I know it seems crazy, but down here it actually works, throughout my years of living and doing some work and becoming part of the media scene I've seen there is gap, something missing with substance that nobody seems to get. I will do launch test how readers and clients react. I think is a good risk, besides it will be extra cash!

i think that's an awesome idea. what's the subject matter?

Make sure its digital....
...Then maybe do a printed versions for VIPs
Try to seriously tackle the fine line between a digital magazine and a tangible piece.
I am actually really surprised that magainzes have not turned into CD's but people still like flipping through pages. I am not sure paper will ever go away, maybe just become digital paper.
I think the Magazine Websites are a good direction but in all reality that is just an overpriced blog.
Try to re-invent...

I'd be interested to see your research on the viability of print magazines because everything I have seen indicates that they are dying off precipitously.

The good thing about magazines is that you can read them on the toilet / in the bath.
Wish you a lot of luck - it'll probably be fun, but to be honest, I'd be quite happy to never see another 'lifestyle/art/fashion' magazine ever again.

i've had that idea before. there's a decent place here in ny that does nice newsprint stuff.

Local lifestyle seems to be a somewhat overlooked niche, just look at Garden and Gun (best title ever)

Thanks guys for all your input, I appreciate the time you took from your busy day. :-) I will definitely have a digital magazine available, and will cover entertainment, life+arts, food and travel. There is a high percentage of restaurants down here. For the first issue I will probably do something the TOP 25 Best burgers in town and sell all 25 places for a good price if you want to have your restaurant publish. The design of the magazine will be clean and elegant, most of the magazine down here if not all of them are clutter with information making them less attractive to the readers.

Focus on defining the kind of content you provide. Then define the medium.

Well so far I've presented the project to a couple of potential clients and they all are really interested. Spoke to a couple of sales agents currently involve with I clients I want to target and they seem also interested. I will soon post the a concept for the new cover of the mag!

"TOP 25 Best burgers in town and sell all 25 places for a good price if you want to have your restaurant publish"
Don't go down this route. Do it properly with great journalism and true reviews otherwise your magazine won't survive.

There are 25 amazing burgers is 1 town....? hmm... I'd be skeptical. If you want to be a lifestyle mag, you need to be creating or catering to a lifestyle. Having a top 25 list is like saying you don't know whats up and can't make up your mind so you're including everything you can get your hands on to sound legit.
Unfortunately, most people don't buy magazines based on how nicely designed they are, they buy magazines based on how much they like the content. If youre doing a mag need amazing content first, and amazing design second
