Afternoon,
I'm looking to get a decent bike between £150 - £400 in London now that the weather is nice so that I can ride to work.
Any suggestions?
Couple of things to note:
- I haven't ridden a bike since I was 5
- I'm not fussed on fixies or hip bikes
- Something that will last, and preferably not from somewhere stolenIdeas on good places central/east?
Thanks

Based in Hackney, these guys are good

but probably more expensive than say, Halfords or Evans. If you can, buy a bike via the Ride to work scheme as it saves you money and don't shop at Evans - they sold me a bike with impossible to find spares and piss poor service

Thanks bluejam - is it possible to get the ride to work scheme for freelancers? I'll ask when I'm back in the office. Just wondering if you knew?

You've got to have nerves of steel to cycle round central London ... the traffic is murderous, Christ.

go for a last year's model.
Ev*ns are doing this trek for £299 which is a bargain (only 15" frame tho...)!
http://www.evanscycles.com/produ…Or fuck Ev*ns and pay £21 more at Cycle UK (15" and 17.5" frame)

gumtree, gumtree, gumtree. that way you can check the bike out in the flesh before buying. If u really don't know a damn thing about bikes maybe buy new. just dont be seduced by a nice make and model if it's in poor condition- you can't just fix it up it'll cost more than a new one's worth
but do a search for the phone number if u see it come up loads of times it's a stolen bike. I recommend a hybrid, faster than a chunky mountain bike but more control and pothole resistant than a road bike.
just make sure the brakes are top notch and the wheels don't wobble when they spin. if they're a bit buckled, you have to loosen the brakes to stop the brakes from hitting the wheel... which is just not cricket.
always try ride with a repair kit, pump and spare tube in yr bag.
helmet is a must you're a moron if you don't use one. Was in A&E last year with a mate who wasn't wearing one and wiped out in front of me :s
so are lights
the barclays bicycle app gives good cycle routes and is free

There used to be a part of the Brick Lane Market that you could go and buy bikes from.
Chances are they're nicked, tho'. I once had mine stolen, went there and could see my seat on one bike, handles on another etc etc
- karma will get you in the end... I bought an amazing Trek for £50 and had it stolen in two weeksclearThoughts

Chamberlains in Kentish Town are good..., some used bikes there too.
