We hire our freelancers at a rate of $120 - $250 an hour depending on project scope and difficulty. We don't do day rates because freelancers are expected to work at minimum a 12 hour shift.
There's a few firms in Burbank that pay higher... That area is worth checking out if you are a serious designer/illustrator.

On my experience it's always hourly. and in regards of rates,
I think it depends on:a) The Agency
b) The Designer
c) Ability to negotiateIt does not depend on:
a) A standard rate
b) Designer experienceA great factor in the negotiation:
a) How much the agency wants you
b) How many projects are you working on currentlyWith that being said, I've seen in go anywhere from $20 to $150 per hour.

I can only speak for ourselves - when we hire on contract ( full-time for more than 2 weeks) we expect a day rate that's more attractive than a straight up hourly rate. Everything is negotiable though, as said above.
- Where does an average day rate range fall in TO right now?ETM
- For AD's? Depends on experience, we never hire AD's here, but the last time I freelanced about 5 years ago was for about $375/dayben_
- I was charging around $375/day. We bring in senior designers for around that currently... depends really.ben_
- around two bacon strips. canadian bacon, that is.akrok
- oh. that's close to mind day rate. and not the bacon rate. :-)akrok
- ..i mean, my rate. not mind, for bloody hell. lol.akrok

It can all be negotiated.
It should be pretty straight forward. Dont sign anything unless you are happy with the pay or the work you will be doing

I've been freelancing for couple of years already. I got an email from an interactive agency asking for my help for a new project. They will probably offer a temporary art-director/designer position. I haven't done any work through a company before what should I expect from this? Do I get paid less than my regular hourly fee? Do they set a schedule for me and I get paid depending on how much time I spent there or is there a fixed daily fee or a total pay at the end of the month/work? Or all of this can be negotiated?
