Guys quick question any suggestion on how to make a website appear among the first 10 results in a search?

Buy a load of domains, point them all to the same server, then create loads of subdomains, then populate a multi user WP install so there're innumerate more sites under sub domains under domains.
Then get a web scraper, hoover up loads of disparate articles, scramble them up a bit post the articles to your site and lal the other sites you've made, pepper with search terms - then go out on to the internet and spam your various sites over every available Googledexed forum with lax policing policies (QBN's a good start) et voila!
You're now banned from Google.

Make good things, create good content, make the world a better place and people will do all this for you.

Depends what the search is. If it's something no one else is trying to rank for then you can easily get in the top 10.

My girlfriend is a wedding photographer and she is trying to appear on the first 10 searches when looking up photography in our area!

Basically the two important factors are your content and how much popularity (links) your site has. The content tells Google what search to rank you for, the links tell them how high to rank.
In terms of content, you'd probably want to include the search term in your title and in the <h1> tag on your page. Then if you have any other sites, link to your girlfriend's site, and make the link text the search term you want to rank for.

You can also use the Google keyword tool:
https://adwords.google.com/o/Tar…
Enter a search term and it will show you how many searches are actually made for it each month and also similar search terms. So instead of "(my town) wedding photographer" you might realize it makes sense to target a slightly different search term, or target multiple terms. Either way it's good to know what people are actually searching for.
