storage question

I have about ten 500GB external drives with data. Having to power them all on and wait for all them to recognize the interface if i daisy-link them takes forever and sometimes one of the drives choses not to cooperate that day and not turn on which screws me up as i can't simply yank it from the chain.
I was thinking of either getting a server with 10 TB of storage and being forced to transfer all that date to the server or pulling the drives from encosuers (Western Digital MyBooks) and simply getting some kind of drive-bay based server and simply inserting all the drives in those bays so they are on all the time.
Am i on the right track? What other solutions do you guys suggest?

i have 7 externals, i feel ya, i poked around here a bit and decided to just put in some huge slave drives inside my mac pro in the future, dealing with externals is a pain

anyone knows a large SATA docking station that allows to dock many, many drives?

am on the look out for this as well....
isn't some kind of raid stack box thing easier then a full on server?

so i ordered 4-bay sata enclosure from newegg - will let you know how that works out.

I'd get new drives/enclosure/raid box. I have little faith in hd longevity, so replacing every 2 years at most is good for the mind and not to expensive these days ($100 for 1 TB is pretty damn cheap).
I'll be doing the same soon, too. Had an Iomega raid box but is ancient now.

How do you back up? Buying a server and putting the data on it sounds like a good idea. Then you can just put the original external drives away somewhere safe for backup.
