Howdy,
Got an iMac a couple of weeks ago, and it's my first mac (been a pc man since 1846). Anyhow, I'm a front end developer, but can handle some back-end stuff too.
Can anyone give me the low-down on what essential web-dev tools I need? Already have xampp running (mysql/php) and all working nicely (kind of).
Any help for a mac noob would be very much appreciated!

For webdev:
Coda (not free, but fucking worth every penny)
MAMP (PHP/MySQL)
FileZillaDone and dusted.
- mamp any better than xampp then?seeessess
- It's effectively the very same thing, except on a Mac platform. XAMPP is Windows-only, if I recall correctly.Continuity
- cool, will give it a blast, thanks :o)seeessess
- Oh, no I'm wrong. XAMPP does run on Mac OS.Continuity
- I know, I already have it running (see first post)seeessess

CODA (http://panic.com/coda/) or Textmate (http://macromates.com/) ... I prefer CODA for the built-in FTP utilities.
MAMP (http://www.mamp.info/en/index.h...
CrossOver (http://www.codeweavers.com/prod... to run IE6/7/8

I prefer TextMate http://www.macromates.com even though we are waiting for version 2 like gamers waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.
I use vmware fusion for IE testing (I have one instance of Windows XP with snapshots of IE6,7 and 8. Another of Windows 7 with IE9.
Transmit as sftp/ftp client. http://www.panic.com/transmit
A good git client is Tower http://www.git-tower.com/ and a good subversion client is Versions http://versionsapp.com/

I tried the whole "apple" experience. Realized I overpaid for hardware and then had to spend close to a grand for software to replicate what I could already do for free. Their "geniuses" knew less about the machines they sold than the Pakistani guy in the little dingy shop on the corner who fixed my PC within a day for next to nothing knew about PC's.
That said, the build quality on the the machine was excellent and it was shiny and I got nods of approval from strange people in Starbucks with other Mac Books.
Then I came to my senses and went back to a PC.
