Buy a used Mossberg model 500/600AT, used, no more than $150, take it out, get used to how it feels, and learn to shoot fast and accurate. But as i said earlier, a good guard dog can protect your kids even if you can'tbe there to, by far the best money spent, plus he'll fetch your paper on Sunday. =)

must guns down here in MX are crazy illegal to have, unless its like a 22 or 25 or something else that will just piss some big rapist off. the gun laws only ensure drug dealers are armed down here, such bull crap.

"The assailant was described as white or Hispanic with a shaved head, no beard, wearing a blue and red windbreaker. Hospital have been warned to look for a man with a stab wound."
I love that they have to describe the person as having NO beard. LOL @ Portland...

I grew up with guns. Ive never owned one. my parents didnt buy me one on my 15th birthday thinking i may be too hotheaded like i was with my bb gun. But they were jsut being overprotective i clearly new the difference... gun beats the fist. and in real fights anything goes and sometimes skill doesnt matter especially with multiple opponents. Just get somethign small and compact liek a glock 39. train your kids... unless you think theyre dumb enough to shoot each other, and have it as an insurance policy

woodyBatts - I can't help but laugh at your name since I just got home from the store where I purchased myself a Louisville Slugger. I agree with learning to fight. Been wanting to actually start studying some form of martial arts. Just not sure which one.
Anyway, I'm not against guns. In fact in a couple of weeks my wife and I are going to the range so she can learn to shoot. I just don't want one in the house.
And sublocked - I don't give a shit if you buy that or not. I have the right to own a gun, just as I have the right to not own one. I don't have anything against anyone that chooses to own a gun and to teach their kids to shoot and respect it. I just don't want one.

@sublocked I grew up with guns as well. Always loaded, never locked as well.
It's all about respect. When a gun is near, death is near. That's what my daddy taught me.

Sorry I don't buy the whole BS argument of "you don't want to have guns in the house with your kids".
I was raised with multiple guns in the house. My father taught us to respect them and how to use them at an early age. I believe I was 10 the first time I fired a gun.
They were never locked up, and they were always kept loaded. We never did anything stupid with em.
@woodyBatts good call on the fighting / discipline issue. I respect that.

Well trained guard dog, best defense you can have, and even works when you are passed out drunk or gone. =) Oh, maybe a 12 gauge too, kids can't do much with one, just keep a few shells out of reach/sight of the kids, but easy for you to get to.

Personally I feel a person should learn to fight first before handling a gun. You would be surprised at how much of fighting is being able to take a hit, or deal with being taken down and grappled with.
I have been training for years in boxing and judo/bjj, you would be surprised how many guys decked out in Tapout break their hands throwing a punch, or after shadow boxing and staring at a mirror get knocked down by one punch from someone half their size. With BJJ it's just ridiculous. Once the adrenaline kicks in most can't go through a 6 minutes round.
Learning to fight and having a sense of self discipline and self power will help control emotions that could lead to a horrible situation when you have a gun in your hand.
Recently I was certified and licensed to use a handgun. Not that i would ever keep one in my home. I just wanted to have the experience. To be frank the trigger is a lot easier to pull then you think...the odds of hurting the wrong person is just too high. But if I accidentally punch a loved one, they'll get over it in a day or two...hopefully :)
The taser is definitely a good idea, just dont taser me bro!

It has nothing to do with being a "liberal pansy". I just don't want any guns in my house. And with kids, that shit'd have to be so locked down it would be kind of pointless.
