Thinking about getting a tablet finally, always heard once you start using one you'll never go back.
So Wacom is the default it seems, do you guys that use a tablet have some recommendations for me for all around use? I'll be using it a ton in Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver as well as Photoshop.
Using CS5 on a new Mac Pro with 10.6.8.
Thanks dudes.

I've been using the Intuos 4 medium, and I love it ... especially using the touch ring with PS CS5's canvas rotate tool. Awesome.

Yeah, cool. This is the one I have my eye one initially:

Just want to hear what other pros are using. All the places I've worked the production teams and/or digital imaging guys use Wacom.
- have this at work and love it. but just got a pen&touch for home.phatwrx

Oh, and also, what learning curve should I expect with a tablet? Is the pressure aspect and other controls fairly intuitive or is it going to take time to finesse it?
- It's very easy to usepinkfloyd
- And yeah, it's super-easy, and takes no time at all to feel natural.Continuity

I would think the large is a bit of overkill, especially if you're using a large monitor, isofar as you've got far more real estate to cover on the tablet to get from one end to the other.
I use the medium with a 27" iMac, and it's kind of the sweet spot between accuracy and speed.
- OK, good input. I'm using a 27" Cinema Display.formula
- The caveat is I've never use a large, so I have absolutely no basis for comparison. Just a guess on my part.Continuity

Intuos 4 Medium - nice size. Not too big, not too small. Don't cheap out on a bamboo as the sensitivity of the pen (ie. you have to hold it closer to the pad) will drive you nuts.

Intuous 4's dont seem to be very left-handed friendly. Ive got the 3 which has the buttons on both sides. Looks like they've ditched that on the newer ones. Ive got the a4 size one and to be honest, for me its too big as i only seem to use the middle section of it.
- you can flip em around. They have wire ports on both sides.Centigrade

Intuos 4 is _very_ left-handed friendly (I'm left-handed). You simply flip is so that the button are on the right, and the LCD displays also flip accordingly. Done and done.

Just bought an Intuos 4. Amazing. I'm left handed too, works a treat.

would love to have an intuos4 but this damn 6x9 intuos3 runs like a dream still!
and yes intuos 4 is very left handed friendly
learning curve is an hour or so and then you'll never go back.

Still on the original alkaline battery.

Right, just to clarify then, the intuos 4 is lefthand friendly?
- I think we may have alluded to that, yeah.Continuity

I'm about to go check them out in person. One final thought though...
Do you find yourself being able to use it universally across all apps? I mean does it, can it, should it replace my mouse entirely?
- My mouse lives in my desk drawer since, like, forever.Continuity
- me too.Centigrade
- and you get a wireless mouse with it too.Centigrade

I'm the only sucker I know with a medium. Despite being a bit bulkier to lug around, the biggest problem, as Continuity mentioned above, is more real estate to cover. It sounds better but it's actually a bummer. At least for me.
- You find the medium too big? I find it just the right balance.Continuity
- < Sorry, I misread you're post above, Continuity. Yeah, I find the medium a bit too big.svante

^ toggle mousemode with one of your express keys. that way you don't need a big arm move to close a window/hit a file menu.
as to formula, It's best for specific purposes... things like the mouse scroll wheel will be missed... the large format ones are annoying to use a scrollbar with in pen mode IMO.

One top tip, formula:
Really take advantage of the customisability of both the tablet and pen. you can really make your workflow super-efficient with the modifier keys on the tablet, and the rocker switch on the pen.
I've got the rocker on the pen bound to right-click (bottom) and Exposé (top), and the Canvas Rotate tool as the default touch ring function (Zoom on the touch ring is a bit clumsy, so I swapped it out).

Got the Medium Intuos 4. Fucking rules. Not sure what to make of all the extra nibs yet.
Thanks for the suggestions and tips.

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. I got one. I love it. It's a laptop and it's a huge-ass tablet.
- Yeah, those are pretty nice...was leaning that way until the SP3 came outformed
