Good day,
I was recently asked by client who works for a non-profit organization funded by the government in Texas. If they could copyright their logo, I gave them this link http://www.copyright.gov/ ,but I was wondering if there is vital information besides that website I could provide them.
Thanks.

^ This. IP matters are one of those situations where you can think you have a handle on what to do, only to find out someone else did the smart thing and hired an attorney first. Besides, that contact will come in handy when they need to file their first cease-and-desist protecting their newly-copyrighted logo.

they may also have to do a search to see if any similar logos exist....
I once worked for a nonprofit who had to change our logo, which really sucked, as the GIANT insurance company who thought our logo infringed on theirs had lawyers up the wazoo and we had to reprint thousands of flyers, brochures, T-shirts,etc...

^ the lawyer does this and documents his attempts at ensuring it was not intentional, any references you can give him will help you in the long run and them be more informative with you as to advise a course of action

can anyone with recent experience give a ballpark cost on copyrighting/trademarking a logo?
- Totally depends. Maybe $500, maybe $5000 (or more). Like licensing anything, many factors to consider.hellobotto

Isn't it copyrighted by default? Copyrighted ≠ registered trademark.
- as far as I'm aware, yes!Amicus
- You're right, but that fact can lead many into a false sense of security. Better to overprotect...hellobotto
