Hello guys, I bought a Mac book pro
a year ago and its been pretty slow lately, taking
forever to open a raw photo and so on.
It has 4 gb of ram and I mostly keep
All my files in an external hard drive, to keep
it light. Any clues?

work off your local drive. use your external for storage and scatch disk.
If you can upgrade to 8GB. Are you doing any 3D stuff? You might want to turn off the GL option under the performance preferences.

also even when you just verify permissions, you clean out the inactive ram. i find this can help in a pinch.

I upgraded to 8 gig from 3 and it made a huge difference, might help

How do you connect the external drive? If it's USB, it's going to be slow. Work off local files, as VikingKingEleven said.
Check Activity Monitor for RAM usage, you'll know what's eating up the memory.

check for viruses as well

Check activity viewer, is there any process running away? Shitty drivers for scanners and printers are common culprits.
How much space do you have free on your main drive?
Do you leave web browsers open with flash banner ads looping in them for days?
Something is amiss, 4 gig of memory and a year old laptop should be plenty for what you are doing.

Try not to have so many apps running at the same time. Or have 30 browser tabs open. I know there is a need to multi-task but keep it in moderation. I find this helps a lot with how fast my computer will respond.

I just ordered new memory for mine yesterday - meant to do that two years ago and fortunately a 4GB pack only cost $55 at Crucial for my older MBP.
But, when Lion comes out, I'm seriously thinking about reinstalling everything from scratch.

Ok so, everything is wiped out I used the clean my mac software, it did cleaned bunch of stuff however the problem persists. I'm starting to think this is something for the guys at apple?
- Do you have iStat? You should be able to see what processes are causing the problem http://www.islayer.c…spot13

could be bad ram.
or a setting in the app you're trying to run -- I know AE had a hissy fit recently because i had the scratch/ram settings completely wrong.
