But in all fairness I don't scan often at all and haven't got a virus in 9 years of windows use.
The whole windows gets viruses thing is so overblown. Its just the odd 5% of old people and retards clicking on 'you have won 1 million dollars'
- there it is. Hombre_lobo does not watch internet porn. Fact.TheBlueOne

Just a note.. on Windows 7 you should always do it in the following order:
1. Install WIndows 7 SP1 (or original Windows 7)
2. Always use a password for your admin account
3. When the Security window asks you during installation install RECOMMENDED settings for Defender and Security4. DO NOT install anything else until you have done the steps after this one
5. Run Windows Update and download EVERYTHING security and patches and Service packs and apply it.. Do not go to any other website or download anything from the web.
6. Restart and all and start IE, run default settings and go to Security Essentials page I gave you above on Microsoft.com and install it.
7. Run the first scan, update definitions and wait until it's done.
8. Check all recommended settings if it asks you
9. Restart and you are done. After that you have no reason to install any other security software or anything. You are well protected.Naturally, don't visit fishy sites but use Chrome if you have to because plugins and various controls are ran in secure sandbox and it's pretty isolated from your system. Chrome should also warn you if a specific site had malware and Essentials will pop up a window warning you too.
Also, make sure you have Windows Update set on automatic downloads and installs to make sure updating process is as transparent to you as possible but still done.
It's been like 10 years since I had any malware or issues on my computer but it's been especially terrific with Windows 7 and Security Essentials. No worries.

^ I've heard good stuff about that too.
But I used to use avast or AVG. Both were good. Just don't leave your anti virus running all the time as it cuts your performance massively.
Just scan weekly and don't install stuff like ' I'm gonna rape your computer.exe'

NOTHING!! Do not use ANYTHING from 3rd parties..
Install clean Windows 7, and install this (it's free)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/s…Update signatures, run the first scan and you are DONE..
Windows 7 already has all you need and it's best and seamless. You will forget it as it is non-existant on resources and it's all transparent unless it intercepts malicious attempts or files.
Trust me.. do this and you forget about viruses.

You may get some sarcastic Mac responses but I had good results (ie no bad ones!) with Norton when I was in PC land.
Some of the devs I work with use BitDefender, but can't speak for that myself.
Boring but true.

- Anyone who suggests Norton should be immediately discredited.404NotFound
