Thoughts about this passage - About Self-promotion, Adrian Shaughnessy writes in How to be a graphic designer without loosing your soul (p121):
"Fame in graphic design circles is a bit like fame in dentistry; it doesn't travel far...no-one is interested in the thoughts of graphic designers beyond he confines of graphic design... When exposed and cross-examined outside the cosy world of design, graphic designers tend to come over as self-centred and only interested in graphic design.
"The lesson is simple: we must not confuse admiration and respect with fame or celebrity. A number of groups have sought to acquire fame and celebrity by hyping themselves and behaving more like boy bands than design groups... The ostentatious gesture of the bravura book project is a typical ruse: a big fat book arrives on the scene, stuffed with visual pyrotechnics, which on the surface appears to show the group as dynamic and boundary-stretching, but on closer inspection is revealed to be egotistical and pointless graphic doodling. And for those who play this game, it is dangerously easy to believe your own hype. It usually ends up with some sort of implosion or dramatic reversal of fortunes."

hmmm. So, I am trying to figure out that fine line of self-confidence and ego crap. I feel like i have neither, but where is that line drawn. Or is this saying that once you get put in a book that you are going to get a big head?

I think egos and hype run in circles and the people who participate eat that shit up. The rest, the intelligent pragmatic thinkers who aren't swayed by hype tend to look at anything that screams me me me with skepticism. I think the line isn't so fine. The work always speaks for itself.

That's a great paragraph, I read that book but I don't remember reading this part, but I agree 100%
I actually get a little upset when I hear the term rockstar designer, because there's no such thing as fame in our little corner of the world.
The only person I can think that has achieved true fame is Steve Jobs, and he is not even a designer, but people outside of design recognize him, his work and constantly hold him up as a design icon due to his work with apple.
Here's a photo of him with a moustache- I guess you have never heard of shepherd fairy : ) or andy warhol? what up sd dawgsduhsign
- fwiw I'm with you...duhsign
- I have, but I think they are known more as artists not designers.Miguex
- Jon Ive.jon_d
- not a rock star. though.akrok
- both were graphic artists so I attach the design bit as well, all graphic designers are graphic artists...layout/com... both designedduhsign
- shepherd doesn't even compare to warhol at all, oranges and bananasduhsign
- he wishes.duhsign

Same with scientists, same with lots of professions.
Only movie stars and musicians reach the masses, because corporations spend millions promoting them.

You think people in Sudan know Steve Jobs?
It's all relative.
- I know thats not what you meant but http://apple-store.i…

probably not, but that's my point.
Rockstar status/ true fame does not exist in our little corner :)

Da Vinci was a designer. And everybody knows Da Vinci.
And Walt Disney.

Great passage from one of my all time favorite books. Its amazing how much truth it holds. Look back over the past 10-12 years, at all the shit hot design studios and "rock star designers." Then see how many are still even around, let alone producing relevant work.

designers are more likely to be infamous than famous most times maybe

How many people outside of Europe know the king of Norway's name?
It's all relative.
- vaxorcist0
well, maybe this all explains why "David Carson" and "famous designer" are often said together....

Who cares if people in Iowa know who you are? As long as you're reaching some people and making things look better.
- Miguex0
If you have to explain someone that you are famous, then what's the point right?

We all can't be cool and famous like Snooki.

So true. However the thread title refers to self-promotion, seeking fame and being pro-active about self-promotion are totally different. Fame us ego-centred, self-promotion is an essential businessstrategy that also proves your worth as a communicator...which is our job.

I didn't quite get that paragraph on the top... it was a little too large, also had complicated words.
Anyway, as I read self-promotion, I wanted to tell all about this big fat book that I'm doing with a group of friends about vinyls and fixies, and playing vinyls on fixies.
It's a bit like noise4 but not quite. We took all the pics with lomos - we are really into plastic lenses.
If you want to collaborate, there's a shortlist. Maybe you will be able to. Oh - we are based in Dalston.

Any strong self promos out there? I'm redoing mine...
- didn't want to start a new thread for this. Can someone point me to a thread already created?ohhhhhsnap
