never unless I'm specifically asked to. They're not powerful enough... so I'd end up making folders/groups and turning them off/on for each comp, in which case anyone else might as well just trun the groups on/off themselves

Yes. If you are not using them and you have to hand off your designs to someone else – you're quite frankly doing it wrong. Layer comps allow you to toggle position and layer styles for all elements, something you can either make a duplicate folder to replicate, or, a layer comp ;D
