hello,
I have been asked to create some artwork for a flash banner animation. For the size of the artwork I have been asked to use a 16:9 ratio, I understand this but is there a typical size (px) artboard I should use to base my artwork on?

You need to ask them what pixel dimensions they want the banner, then your good to go.
If I remember rightly swfs don't do too well when resized.
- So you wanna get the dimensions right first time round.Hombre_Lobo
- if vector art they resize great but any images wont resize wellfadein11

Yep - most definitely best to get the correct dimensions from the outset. Although if the content is all vector based, it will scale with no problems :]- < ^ oh yeah for static vector art its fine, but in the past when Ive had to scale animations with tweens etc it causes problems.Hombre_Lobo

Standard banner sizes here:

if you are just doing artwork - do it big at that ratio and it will resize down fine.

NOTE: Do they REALLY mean 16:9, or something "close to it" .... knowing exact pixel sizes as @fadein11 and @adumbratesly indicate is very important.... vectors scale nicely to 16:9 but not 16:94 or whatever it becomes...
unless they want it for 16:9 DVD or something like that....
