In 2009, the average murder rate for states with a death penalty was 4.9 per 100,000 people, while the average murder rate for states without a death penalty was only 2.8.
Furthermore, in 2009, of the 25 states with the highest murder rates, 23 of them have death penalties. According to information from the Census department, in 2006, of the 25 states with the most violent crimes, 21 of them had death penalties. States that use the death penalty do not see lower murder rates.
And yet, the death penalty imposes an enormous financial burden on our country. In nearly all states with a death penalty, it costs more annually to carry out carry out an execution than sentence someone to lifetime incarceration. Based on a 2008 report from the Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice, the annual cost of the death penalty system in California is conservatively estimated to be $137 million, when the additional appeals and investigations are included. The cost of a system which imposes a maximum penalty of lifetime incarceration in place of the death penalty would be $11.5 million.

- larger than keeping the guy alive for 75 years? I doubt it.popfodders
- ukit, there's far too many variables in that equation. how much of that $137M is based upon appeals, etc.?popfodders
- So no appeals? Even better!ukit
- and your article has very few if any at all professional references. College staff columnist? Dig harderpopfodders
- No. I didn't say that, but that's part of that cost, I bet. Yes, it's expensive. I don't trust that source though.popfodders
- Here's an idea, if in fact that amount is valid, cut costs in the death penalty execution process.popfodders
- oooh, check pop out - questioning the validity of the source material. Wasn't so hard, was it?Fax_Benson

Im sure now all efforts will goto Mumia. Now with a Republican governor in Pennsylvania don't be surprised if we hear more about this. Although statistically speaking PA doesn't execute but they could transfer him to another state like...

Why do we kill people, who kill people, to teach that killing people is wrong?
- An eye for an eye. I'm a strong believer of it. You kill an innocent person, we will kill you back.CygnusZero4
- And I dont like my tax dollars being spent to keep these assholes alive in prison for their entire lives.CygnusZero4
- I don't know but let's kill the official that killed troy davis that killed that copset

In one, very specific, way i agree with Cygnus. It's over and done. Can't bring him back regardless of the recantations or whatever.
Probably a better use of the energy displayed in this thread to look for other cases where the guilt/evidence/eyewitness testimony is thought to be in question and bring as much attention to those stories as was/is being brought to Davis's before it gets too far gone to help.
R.I.P. all the dead people
- RIP, all the murderers? Are you fucking kidding, I hope they are suffering in the afterlife.popfodders

How's this idea Popfodders?
The very next day after sentencing. Head on a block. A masked man with large axe. No appeals. No pardons.
Eye for an eye. Cheap. Easy. Done.- Na you're going too far with it. Appeals are done for a reason. This guy had appeals. They didnt work, and he died, as he should have.CygnusZero4
- ... should have.CygnusZero4

"wrong place, wrong time, bad luck, too bad" in response to being handed the death penalty unjustly is an dumbshit way of thinking.
- CygnusZero40
Its usually those fucking eurofags that seems to make all these stupid remarks about the death penalty. Any asshole that things you should be allowed to sit in a nice modern prison after taking an innocent life is really just on a level of idiot I cant even fathom.
Have you watches those prison reality shows. It's really not that bad of a life. Well aside from not having women around, you have your own room with a TV, bathroom, they actually have jobs and make money (WTF???), library, outdoor gym, public movie night, counselors, church and a bunch of other nice shit available to them.
So a dude that kills a cop is allowed to have all of this stuff for the rest of his life? Uh yeah I dont think so. Lay down and take this needle in your arm and shut up.
- you just show so much ignorance. i really pity you.isakosmo

cygnus, popfodders, do you think there has ever been a case of someone being wrongly convicted and therefor executed ?

I'm a free man and I have to buy my own meals and pay taxes. My tax dollars are being used to provide convicted criminals with free meals, entertainment and a bunch of other nice shit while in prison.
Well I have to live with that, but what really sucks is providing all of that to people who took another persons life from them. Yeah that fucking sucks, so when I hear about an execution thats just fine with me. People dont usually get fucking executed in the US for no reason just so you know. There's usually like a good reason behind it, 'n stuff.
- and a large percent of those people shouldn't even be in jail. people busted with weed for example. incarceration is a business.johnny_wobble

- fucking hell. How old are you? I'm guessing either 13 or 200.Fax_Benson

"An eye for an eye. I'm a strong believer of it. "
oh dear.
we may as well roll back society a few thousands years and let the religious fundamentalists take over.
- Ohhhh really, so if I went and killed your mother, you would pardon me and grant me freedom? FUCK YOUpopfodders
- Oh because of course that's the only other option, isn't it ? Learn to think in subtler ways, this is important shit now. Come on.mikotondria3
- this just in. "lowimpakt of Ireland's mother was killed by some sick fucks, but he's ok with granting them pardons based upon a coppopfodders
- screwing up the evidence or a jury, becoming liberal 10 years later". FUCK OFFpopfodders
- johnny_wobble0
do you only shout "an eye for an eye!" in a murder case?
or if they rape somebody, you want them assraped and call it square?
they steal something, somebody comes and steals their shit?
you tag a wall, somebody comes to tag yours?
you assault somebody, you get your ass kicked?honest question, I don't get it. Where else does an eye for an eye apply?
- nothing? just murder?johnny_wobble
- I could deal with rape for rape or hanging for rape. yeah, it's one thing Iran has rightpopfodders
- rape for rape?! really? nice. fuckin' retard. i'd rather them loose their freedom than take an ass pounding.johnny_wobble
- ukit0
Well in some Muslim countries if you steal they cut off your hand.
I'm assuming even the strongest advocates of the death penalty here would never suggest doing that.
But ultimately isn't execution more barbaric? Personally I'd rather be missing a hand than be dead. I guess death is cleaner and easier to forget about.
- actually, I'm closer to be in favor of that. I hate a fuckin' thief.johnny_wobble
- Uhmmm I totally agree with that. You don't see a lot of stealing now do you? It's a deterrent and it works.popfodders
- jon_d0
his death is on the witnesses that sent him away, nothing more, nothing less. dont make this more than it is. happens everyday in the us of a.
- lowimpakt0
CygnusZero4. give it a rest. you're starting to sound unhinged.
i personally don't care how ignorant you are or how anachronistic and fundamentalist your views are.
I also personally don't care about your homophobic insults. It says a lot about you as a person.
what I do care about is you being a dick to everyone else in this thread.
In the future, if you have an issue refer it to me directly.
