Now this is what Flash should be used for!
All the shit that HTML5&c. can't, yet.

Now, if they could just get Linux support enabled, we could begin an era of entirely platform-independent (where PCs are concerned, at any rate) games.

Haters.

It's the only direction they can move to, maybe a bit late (I think they should have done it years ago, before apple decided to exclude the flash player from ios), but at least they are moving in that direction now.

detritus; they have released FP11 for linux:

Who cares about Linux support? I think we can all agree that Linux on the desktop is just wishful thinking.

This is looks cool and all but...
It is a decade old games engine, already ported to every platform out there including iOS (originally for 3GS), Android.
My copy of UT 2003 (UE3) came on 6 CDs; my browser caches 100MB - how long will I have to wait to download something (akin to the demo video) using this?
I'm guessing that the games are still deployed from UnrealEditor or whatever (ie. focused at allowing publishers to deploy their games on multiple platforms, and for promos/ demos) so it's probably not going to undead Flash or (like Unity before it) realise any of the potential advantages of having such a game in a browser in the first place...
- ok, UT2003 was Unreal 2 but stillkingsteven
- ..but still, you've just realised your point was wholly undermined, or..?detritus
- Well, mostly undermined.detritus
- na, other than it's not a decade old engine (more like 5 years)kingsteven
- i mean it looks great, i'm not arguing that. i'd just consider alternativa a better engine in this context...kingsteven
- even with the comparatively shitty graphicskingsteven
- define a better engine? apart from unreal, cryengine and unity, what would you use?M_C_P
- in the context of the possibilities of GPU accelerated graphics in flash, all those games engines are great but they're just buying up real estatekingsteven
- ...buying up browser real estate.kingsteven
- Projectile0
one a side note.... anyone else spend more time flying around those landscapes than actually playing the game?
- animatedgif0
This sort of shit should have been done 3/4 years ago.
Director was doing GPU 3D FUCKING AGES ago.
- true dat. these demos always remind me of flying around the playstation '3rd place' site 8? years ago.kingsteven
- CyBrainX0
True about Director. Flash probably should have had this as soon as Macromedia acquired it.
- plash0
Director did have 3d object code but it was NOT GPU accelerated; no api to the graphic processor existed which may shockwave output real slow and chunky. lingeo was way too underdeveloped for anything that fancy to occur. in Director 11 they used "physics Xtra" which utilized the Ageia physics engine. plus that IDE has been abandoned for several years now to said flash/ actionscript. (to myunderstanding)

^yeh man! well said.
It still amazes me how few applicaitons in 3D and video editing don't have video acceleration. There are less than 6 third party apps (iirc), none of which are great.

This unreal shit is amazing.
Flash is awesome for some things. Anyone who says it isn't good for anything is retarded. All these platforms have their advantages.
I am interested in how this differs from http://www.quakelive.com/#!home (goodbye productivity).
'Quake live is compiled in code on the computer and is not flash'...interesting.
- Hombre_Lobo0
The wiki page for adobe flash even says its awesome.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ado…Who was that eh??????? :D

@kingsteven: the unreal 3 engine has been used by quite a few high profile games. The arkham asylum series, bioshock series, borderlands, gears of war..
these are serious games. and the same engine will now export to something the flash player can read. this is pretty impressive if you ask me.
- unreal engine is great, but it's proprietry platform now publishing to a proprietry player's open platform.kingsteven
- it's not flashkingsteven
- ukit0
It is impressive, but at the end of the day you will still need the same skills and small army of developers you needed to produce Bioshock or Arkham Asylum outside of Flash to produce it in Flash:)
- ifeltdave0
very true, ukit! the real potential will always lie with the artist / developer. the technology is just a means to an end.
personally i'm hoping that unreal licenses a version of the engine specifically for flash. some kind of api or something that makes it a little easier to use and understand. if they did this, they would be able to compete with unity for the indie game developers out there.
making this shit accessible is the first step to some really great content!
- plash0
^ lol, outta of the games out there you chose Direct X 10/11; but yeah agreed. i think this Unreal 3 Engine port is more of a benchmark product demo. in practicality, check out this http://www.nissan-stagejuk3d.com… out ... welcome to flash 11 development with full gpu acceleration.
- ukit0
It's also interesting to consider...for a full-scale online game, would they really use Flash?
If you're talking about signing up for monthly subscription to play a MMORPG, people are fine with (and would expect) spend the time downloading a real program.
But this might open up a new niche of 3D games that are more casual. Think shooter or racing game rather than RPG. Or for games to be integrated more heavily in advertising.
- imagine though not having to download an executable, and instead playing in a browser. on any machine.ifeltdave

this years MAX conference was all about acceptability and code diversity. Adobe already has tools that port directly to ios and android, htm5/ css and native air. all in one application (called Edge) give it 3 years and those tools will be streamlined.
as for the 3d, ive been reading up on flash 11 and holly cow. they are making flash a powerhouse of a ide. some of the 2d/3d games
http://www.adobe.com/solutions/g…this is done all in falsh 11
(looks like diablo 1/2)this isnt even touching on the huge effort that adobe has been making in the CSS realm . between css regions and css shaders

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/html…i was blown away by adobe this year.. smart company that is building tools that will make me more money and save time!
