my dad collected, but when he was a kid, his father one day up and sold most of his collection. what he had left he ended up splitting between my sister and I, and i eventually got all my sister's stamps (i stole them out of her albums for years and eventually she realized she didn't give a shit and gave them all to me). every now and then i'll go to stamp bourses and look for bargains. It's a dying hobby, i'm usually the youngest one at these things by decades. self-sticking stamps and those horrendously ugly UPC stamps, not to mention the internet, really put the last nail into the coffin.

always found it interesting how smaller countries, especially the caribbean islands and a lot of the arabian emirates and some east bloc countries used to just churn out stamps at a frantic rate for collectors. they'd put any and everything on stamps, hoping they'd get snapped up by the topical collectors, knowing full well they'd never be mailed. free revenue.
