Hi guys,
What is the best way to trademark a logo/brand.. without going through thousands of pounds of costs.
I checked out the IPO website, but it would be interesting to hear from people who have successfully trademarked their brand.
Thanks, if no one wants to reveal it here just drop me an inbox.

It depends on the country it's being trademarked in, doesn't it?

Don't know much about it in the UK, but here in Canada it's something that you definitely need a lawyer for, and a decent IP/CR lawyer or firm will have a meeting with you about process and fees before charging you anything. After that, it gets pricey.

I kinda think it's a ridiculous practice in this day and age... impossible to verify your brand is unique and/or protect it.

I was looking into it this week actually.
So far I think the best to do is register the URL and register a dormant company with Company's house.
That's at least £100 a year though.

^ Interesting Horton. I guess the only way to truly protect it is to pay through the nose for it.

Yeah, a copyright or trademark is only going to be as good as your intent and ability to enforce it. Once I was presented design assets from an old client, and the logo looked an awful lot like someone elses', I asked if they saw the resemblance and if they had looked into whether or not it was trademarked - to which they responded "so what if it is?".
- If it is trademarked it only makes it easier to legally go after those that infringe.bzsaw

So what do you think the best thing to do is ben? Someone told me that I should document all my work that I did on the brand beforehand and post it to myself but never open it.

Just put a little ™ next to it and call it a day.

You can trademark it yourself in the US. Possibly can do the same in the UK. Cost a lot less than going through legal services. I recently did this one.
