Clearly I've hit a nerve here.
I thought that their thematic similarities combined with interviews where she lists him as an artist she looks at/inspired by was more than enough correlation. Subjectivity aside, I can respect that the over-whelming majority of you prefer her work and won't argue that. I admit my bias, him being a good friend of mine and I can see that she clearly is a skilled painter. My issue, as it's always been, is that there's a lot of themes repeated and some tricks she's used that if were autonomously used I'd say were from the huge pool of talent and inspiration out there. Yes, there are a lot of illustrators doing work like this and my friend is NOT the best at it or the originator. Because there have been a lot of things used in tandem my conclusion is that it became less 'inspired by' and more 'borrowed from' - which to echo a good many of your comments is the name of the game and how we all make a living. Look at the example of Jonathan Ive & Dieter Rams or Ryan McGinley & Janine Gordon. A lot people would cry foul because of some blatant, thematic/formal examples of 'inspiration' - but others would say they're being informed by the collective and pushing the medium forward because it's done better. Better is subjective. At the end of the day I would hope we could discuss this rationally and not throw insults or one sentence jabs - I'm cool being wrong - and perhaps, in this case I was. I take it as a lesson not only in illustration but also evaluation.
@e-pill: Did I ever do anything personal to you?

i think everyone, especially artist, at one time or another has a source of influence. you may call it what you like; inspired or ripping off. but i think it's part of the process of developing skill and style.
it's not like she's copy pasting some codes or posting images and calling it her own. she still have to put time and effort into her work. i don't understand why you are even concerned about this, especially since she mentioned your friend as a source of inspiration.
looking at her current work, seems to me shes beginning to develop a style of her own. your friend should be proud she once looked up to him and became the artist she is today

Biased, because I know Charmaine, but I don't see any dangerous overlap.
