I am still selling 3D models that I made about 10 years ago. Amazing, really, I get these random checks from TurobSquid a few times a year (not much, but at least a few k over the years...I'll take it).

An image cropping service could fill the days between your contracts. A lof of small online shops need a bunch of images on white backgrounds for amazon etc.. Mostly shitty photographs, you create a path around it 25 times a day. It's pure zen. Did this for some months and had an extra $250-500/month with two or three afternoons working. Sometimes I did it in the office when projects were low :D
- I could get down with this.
How'd you get into it/get business?duckseason - two people were my clients: a postproduction office and some guy with a shop for office suppliesmekk
- where can we apply?benfal99

If you check out the designer Chris Spooner, he started a blog on the side and now earns enough to not have to do client work:

or you could write some books like David Airey:

He also make a bit from blogging.

- Do you have to get the prints made and dispatch or do you just provide the artwork?BaskerviIle
- just provide the artwork. they do all the rest. you sets your profits and they dont take much. seems coolbenfal99

I think the key is no matter what you do, its very rare that it will just 'happen' that money starts rolling in. You need to advertise like any business and once you hit that critical mass where news outlets are writing about your weird offbeat idea, you're made in the shade.
- for the one week that people are interested in, then it's back to penniless obscurity.mantrakid

I sell prints on etsy...don't promote it at all really, only through my website with a link. I find using FB to be annoying to friends and family...But occasionally throw a link out on twitter.
I also sell stuff through DesignByHumans (t-shirts, phone cases & prints) Not much but about $50-$100 per month.
A friend of mine started making shirts, hats, and beer mugs with a Beer Themed idea and since it's targeted to people who like beer, he sells quite a lot. Women love buying beer stuff for their man he has told me...that's his target market. He also goes to bars here in San Diego and asks if they'll carry his Beer related stuff like shirts etc...
I think if you find a niche, you can do pretty good.

pop culture art seems to do very well, this guy is probably making a killing.
