I've been in Bangkok for the past 10 months working and travelling with a MacBook and an iPad and I've never ran into trouble.
Just be cautious and don't make it obvious you're carrying expensive stuff.
There are loads of good co-working places in Bangkok too, check out these two if you can: http://www.thirdplacebangkok.com… and http://www.tcdc.or.th/

Hmm, I just bought a MBAir, but am worried about humidity, theft etc...turned full Apple retard basically. Maybe I'll just get good insurance and not worry.

I travel asia a lot and always take a laptop.
it's not a big deal these days, so many people do, you don't look like a target. there is wifi everywhere, mobile internet is cheap too.
nothing nicer than sitting in a beach hut watching a sun set while checking QBN.

with extra RAM, lightroom 3.0 is usable on a Gateway 1ghz netbook

Good tip on the netbooks, thanks. Anyone tried running Adobe stuff on any of these? I know it'll be shit at best, but can they struggle through if needed?

I'd avoid the cities.... I was there many years ago.
RE: laptop? I'd get a VERY CHEAP netbook, and a bunch of USB flash drives, copy stuff to them and mail them home every so often in case your netbook walks.... or dies due to weather/humidity.... the battery life and size and cheapness of a netbook is great for travel.

I wanted to go as well, but with those flooding I recon it isn't a good time to go. maybe later this year though.

Stay out of the crazy clubs, not worth the trouble. In fact, law low in general. See the natural beauty, the cities stink to high heaven.

Stay away from Patong if going to phuket. The whole town is a big tourist trap.

Phi Phi is the place to go for relaxation and beautiful beaches. Been twice and will go again. Bangkok goes without saying.

It's funny that Chiang Mai is so popular among westerners. It's a mildly pleasant but not impressive in any way city when you think of it... I wouldn't spend more than a day or two there.
- the city itself might not be too impressive, but the countryside is beautiful, also the way to chiang rai and golden triangled_gitale

just been to Chiang Mai in the north, super nice. weather is great this time of year. i recommend trekking in the mountains, then go to Krabi or one of the islands for the most amazing beaches. Dont forget to enjoy some Bangkok madness in between. Thailand has it all.
- Ace, I'm starting in Chiang Mai so this sounds about right, ta!SteveZissou
- Night train from CM to Bangkok was a good experienceraf
- agree on the nighttrain, did Malaysia to Bangkok in one of thosed_gitale

You can also take a few days and fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to see Angkor Wat—arguably the most awesome ancient temple complex on the planet. I think you need your visa sorted before that though.
- Nice1, I've been looking at Angkor Wat today (caught Baraka recently!)SteveZissou
- I'll check out the Visa req, thanks!SteveZissou

You can walk in to Myanmar (formerly Burma) when in the Golden Triangle area (Mae Sai). It'll cost you $10 and you will have to get your Thai visa re-issued on return but even a few hours are worth it. Check current news whether it's safe at the time...
