I have not found another equal, at a considerable reduction in cost.
I would love options/opinions if anybody has any.

The ikea system uses cheap press/mdf board.
This is why I have been searching auctions, I do agree 6 or even 3k is expensive.

I have these links saved to my wish list for when I get some extra money lying around to tackle this need for myself:

"You can probably get the same thing from Ikea for a couple of hundred bucks or less"
The idea is that this will last your entire life. Ikea wont and looks shit.

Check the Antonius system at ikea.

even if you have to replace parts every year, it's still a lot cheaper than 3k

They are just fucking bookshelves, right? All wall mounted, with what looks like a three drawer unit as well and some single pedestal desk thingy - right? Ffs - 6000 bones?
Wall mounted stuff is total shit, simply because rarely do you have a wall/frame that can change over time - i.e. more books, more objects, more stress on the supports, etc. Have your cousin Ernie come over, put down his glass on wine on one shelf, lean on a another make his point ...cue the domino effect.
For 6000 you can get a bookcase made that will last more or less forever and have climate control so the dead tree materials don't rot out.
- Ernie's a fuckn douche anywaysGeorgesII
- True... but he is your cousin and his mom, your aunt, is hot, hot, hot...doktornomore

- really, that sucks,GeorgesII
- Looks awful, especially the holes on the vertical bars.animatedgif
- It's basically the same as the 606.toodee

the placement of that single desk leg looks a bit brutal ...

I've owned a small 606 system for years, I like the fact that I can add to it whenever I want, the people who run the company are extremely helpful and the product is incredible. Sure it's expensive and sure you could buy a lifetime worth of Ikea for the same price or less, but that's not really the point is it?
- For 6000 bananas I can buy a lot of things *other* than that bookcase...doktornomore
- sure you could, i think that's the point.ben_

^ Yeah it is worth noting one of the main points of the 606 was that you start small and keep adding to it.
- and because it's a design classic it will still be extendable in 15 years while some Ikea POS will be discontinuedanimatedgif
- or broken/unable to move it to your next placetimeless
- Do you not own a screwdriver?animatedgif

Dude, I wasn't criticizing the 606, it's just a lot of money for a guy like me to spend on shelves. Just pointing out "a lot" cheaper alternatives. But if you have the money and motivation, just go for it. Nobody is stopping ya.

i did this same set up with the elfa system for about 1/5 the cost......if money is important.....
- ksv1230
the shelf itself is not appealing on elfa.
- lol, really,
then go spend your cash mate, why ask, if you have some cash to burn throughGeorgesII - I am thinking there has to be a viable alternative that has aesthetics and structural prowess.ksv123
- you set the bar pretty high for modular shelving. Everything in the same aesthetic ball park is cheaper, in all ways.ben_
- it's just sooooo nice.ksv123
- go for it bro - I can hear your wallet craving it...doktornomore
- lol, really,
