Hey,
Having recently moved to the Islington area I'm keen to do a pub/bar crawl around Angel / Upper St this Saturday night. I've been to a few places around the area but with so many bars and pubs, want to make sure I'm going to the right places. Can anyone suggest a good pub crawl around the area? Also, is Slim Jim's any good? We couldn't get in there last time because we had no girls in the group.
Suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Angel kind of provides a big-ass loop for you to go around - so why not just agree on the roads to go on and see what takes your fancy?
Is Slim Jims that Americana-esque bluesy type place midway up?
If so, meh. But then I'm old and don't go in for forced aesthetics any more. Seems straitjacketed and insincere - rarely a good combo for letting your hair down and just getting on with an evening.
- Oh yeah, it is that place.
Too fucking dark too.detritus - Loop as in Upper Street, CanonBury Road, Essex Road / Liverpool Road.detritus
- Slim Jims is alright in the sense it's open fucking late.
Only been when very drunk.animatedgif
- Oh yeah, it is that place.

Welcome to the area! Slim Jim's used to be good. It got closed down a few years back due to some date rape case. Haven't got a clue what it's like now. A few good places on Essex rd too. I'll get a list together for you later.

The elbow room in angel, unlike the one in shoreditch high street, is actually nice. I remember the lodge being good. And there was a little place with a djs and a bit of latin flavour further down in Upper st.
Also there are good Mexican or two...
- Unfortunately the Elbow Rooms in Angel closed. But one still open in ShoredtichNightshade

Thanks both! I'm just in Canonbury - so was hoping to uncover some gems. Hoping to start the crawl around 4pm and finish around 4am if possible. Is anywhere open that late? Also, anywhere with live music or a good DJ would be great.
Thanks again.

thanks for reminding me Maikel. Is there anywhere that's pretty good for a relatively cheap dinner + drinks for a group of us? We went to the brazilian bbq on upper st on Sat night but the drinks were pretty expensive and I felt sick after eating too much -- not wanting that again prior/during a night of drinks.
- Can't beat burritos on the hoof - and yes, that South American place does get expensive.detritus
- bastard cheap meat carrot on a string...detritus
- I think Macondo was closed down, but there's fast-food-looking Mexican place in Upper st that makes great food.maikel
- Chilango? I can't help but divert in there every time I go anywhere near Angel.detritus
- = me sat in the park, stuffing my face with burrito and cider, alone, in the cold. Like last Friday, 4pm.detritus
- CHILANGO - YOU GOT IT!!!
It looks so cheap from outside that you wouldn't dare to go in unless you know is good...
maikel - recommended by a Mexican friend...maikel
- Oh god I walked out of the place and didn't even pay. WORST place in Islington.Chimp

You've got to go to Le Mercury... it's probably the BEST inexpensive French food you might get in London...
There are also a few Lebanese places that prepare great Mezze. Just trying to recall the name... O_o

Is it just fellas? This will make a difference.

At this stage, although there might be a couple of girls joining us. Trying to avoid this as they're gf's of the guys going.

Hey Domacle - you can head to The New Rose, then wander down the street to The Old Queens Head - awesome pub! On Friday nights they charge like 3 quid to get upstairs and they often have DJ's warming up there before doing their sets down at Fabric later that night - guaranteed a good time!

Oh, and if you want to go somewhere a bit different - walk about 500m along Regents Canal towards East London, you'll find the boathouse pub right on the canal - very cool little spot.

If it's a lads night out:
Start at Highbury corner at The Hen & Chickens. Walk down Upper St until Canonbury Lane and pop in to 25 Canonbury. Back on to Upper street after and head to Albert & Pearl. Followed by The Kings Head. Walk down to the green and left on to Essex Rd. As RIZ said, the Old Queens Head (get there early, it gets packed and fussy on the door for a group of lads) and further down the New Rose. If that's not enough head up to the Compass on Chapel Market.
If Arsenal are playing on Saturday it might get busy on Upper st with groups.

Hey I used to live on St Pauls road!
I would recommend the New Rose on Essex road.
Plus, check this out. Complete with map and everything!

I live on St. Paul's road.
Arsenal are playing the day after. Going to the game. But let's not get into Arsenal right now...
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Are there any decent bars that have a really good dancefloor for past midnight?
Appreciate your help!

Is "The Arc" any good?

The Angelic near Sainsburys is a must if only for the comedy piped into the toilets.

Hey domacle, welcome to the hood! I also live in Canonbury.
I can't add much to the above list of pubs. I agree that Le Mercury is great for cheap good food. Slim Jim's isn't great. Good pubs are the Alwyne Castle, The New Rose, The Angelic, the Grand Union and The Albion. In terms of heading out for a dance, Angel is more of a "sit down sipping beers" place than a place to get your dance on. For that it's usually best to head to Shoreditch. But the best for that in Angel would be upstairs at the Old Queens Head. Just get there early to avoid queuing, it gets busy.
I gave your mix a listen, I like it. I'm a bit of a bedroom-DJ too. If you fancy meeting up for some local beers drop me an email.
