The last voyage of the Clotilda, from Benin, Africa, to Mobile Bay, Ala., “represented one of the darkest eras of modern history,” Lisa Demetropoulos Jones, the commission’s executive director, said in a statement.

Days before Boston’s Pride parade fills city streets, celebrating the LGBTQ community, another parade proposal is causing an uproar on social media. John Hugo is the president of a group calling itself Super Happy Fun America. His goal is to create a straight pride parade.
Hugo explains, “We want people to be aware that there is not only one side of things. There’s a lot of people that are uncomfortable with a lot of things that are going on in our country and they’re afraid to speak up.”
The idea for a straight pride parade is one Mayor Walsh is quick to dismiss.
“Come on, I don’t know what this straight pride parade is all about. I know that we have a pride parade on Saturday and that’s what I’m going to march in,” Mayor Walsh said.
Boston Pride President Linda Demarco says in a statement: “Boston Pride welcomes everyone to march in the Pride Parade this Saturday, June 8th. We know that straight allies of the LGBTQ community are among the thousands of supporters who come out every year to march, observe and celebrate. We are looking forward to seeing our straight friends, family, and neighbors at the Boston Pride parade and festival this Saturday along with members of the LGBTQ community. In the meantime, we are focused on putting on our largest Boston Pride parade ever.”

Fearless Girl Scouts still heading to Dominican Republic despite tourist deaths
A group of Girl Scouts is heading down to the Dominican Republic, telling their local TV station that they’ve been waiting “months” to take the trip — and couldn’t care less about the nine tourists who’ve died there.
“We don’t need to live in fear,” said Amir Samandi, executive director for Summer of Service San Antonio, the volunteer group that organized the trip.
“I think we live in a society that manufactures fear,” he told FOX 29 on Tuesday.
Fifteen girls are reportedly making the trek to the DR, where they’ll be attending a Women’s Leadership Conference and doing community service. The group, which is made up of teenagers, is scheduled to leave Thursday and will be staying for eight days with adult chaperones.

A woman whose unborn baby was killed in a 2018 Pleasant Grove shooting has now been indicted in the death.
Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old Birmingham woman, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a manslaughter charge. She was taken into custody on Wednesday.
Though Jones didn’t fire the shots that killed her unborn baby girl, authorities say she initiated the dispute that led to the gunfire. Police initially charged 23-year-old Ebony Jemison with manslaughter, but the charge against Jemison was dismissed after the grand jury failed to indict her.
