"Beavers have been brought back to London for the first time in more than 400 years to help restore nature and river habitat and reduce flood risks.
A male and female beaver, both aged two, were released into a specially designed enclosure in the grounds of Forty Hall Farm in Enfield on Thursday.
The species was hunted to extinction in Britain in the 16th Century for its fur, glands and meat.
Enfield Council and Capel Manor College devised the north London project.
Ian Barnes, Enfield Council's deputy leader, said it was "quite emotional" when the pair - who have been temporarily nicknamed Justin Beaver and Sigourney Beaver - were released into the wild."

The footage of that Chinese airliner coming Straight Fucking Down is terrifying. I hope all the passengers were unconscious for the two minutes that thing was apparently nosediving for, otherwise that would be one terrifyingly-shitty way to go. Poor bastards.

A Birth Control Pill for Men Could Start Human Trials This Year
Scientists are still racing to create the first male contraceptive that isn’t a condom or surgery. In new preliminary research, a team says they’ve developed a non-hormonal form of male birth control, one that kept lab mice sterile for four to six weeks with seemingly no side effects. Early human trials of the pill are expected to begin by the end of the year.

Health risk due to micro- and nanoplastics in food
https://www.meduniwien.ac.at/web…
Vienna, 24-03-2022) Five grams of plastic particles on average enter the human gastrointestinal tract per person per week. This is roughly equivalent to the weight of a credit card. Whether ingested micro- and nanoplastics pose a health risk is being investigated in numerous studies but is largely unknown to date. A research team from MedUni Vienna has now summarised the current state of scientific knowledge. The review article has just been published in the journal Exposure & Health. To Waste or Not to Waste: Questioning Potential Health Risks of Micro- and Nanoplastics with a Focus on Their Ingestion and Potential Carcinogenicity
https://link.springer.com/articl…
Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are recognized as emerging contaminants, especially in food, with unknown health significance. MNPs passing through the gastrointestinal tract have been brought in context with disruption of the gut microbiome. Several molecular mechanisms have been described to facilitate tissue uptake of MNPs, which then are involved in local inflammatory and immune responses. Furthermore, MNPs can act as potential transporters (“vectors”) of contaminants and as chemosensitizers for toxic substances (“Trojan Horse effect”). In this review, we summarize current multidisciplinary knowledge of ingested MNPs and their potential adverse health effects. We discuss new insights into analytical and molecular modeling tools to help us better understand the local deposition and uptake of MNPs that might drive carcinogenic signaling. We present bioethical insights to basically re-consider the “culture of consumerism.” Finally, we map out prominent research questions in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.- neatimbecile

Plastic particles found in human bloodstreams for the first time ever
https://www.ketk.com/news/health…
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – (StudyFinds.org) – Plastic contamination is something many people fear will destroy the environment, but a new study warns that it’s also polluting our bodies as well. Researchers in the Netherlands have found plastic particles in the human bloodstream for the first time ever.
Their results reveal that these microscopic particles coming from the environment around us are being absorbed by the body and are entering the blood supply. Study authors at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam examined 22 individuals who anonymously donated their blood for testing. The team scanned each sample for five distinct polymers — the building blocks of plastic.

Microplastics Detected in Human Blood in New Study
Researchers found plastic in the blood of 17 of 22 of study participants, or about 77 percentMargaret Osborne
March 28, 2022https://www.smithsonianmag.com/s…
Microplastics, or tiny plastic particles, are ubiquitous pollutants found almost everywhere on earth. Scientists have detected microplastics near the peak of Mount Everest, in the Mariana Trench and even in baby poop. But researchers have now found a new vessel for microplastics: human blood.
In a paper published in Environment International, researchers found plastic in the blood of 17 of 22 of study participants, or about 77 percent.

Microplastics have been identified in human blood for the first time, raising concerns that the omnipresent particles are also making their way into organs.
https://edtimes.in/these-most-co…
The virtually undetectable plastic fragments have already been discovered almost everywhere else on Earth, from the deepest oceans to the highest peaks, as well as in the air, soil, and food chain.
What Do Studies Have To Say?
Microplastics were discovered in nearly 80% of blood samples from 22 anonymous, healthy participants, according to a Dutch study published in the Environment International Journal on Thursday. The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development, as well as Common Seas, a UK-based organization dedicated to eliminating plastic pollution, supported the research.Polyethylene terephthalate or PET plastic, which is commonly used to make water bottles, was found in half of the blood samples, while polystyrene, which is commonly used in disposable food containers and other products, was found in more than a third.
