Very shitty people on both sides.palimpsest - What was the bridge doing in the middle of the water in the first place? And why didn't it move out the way?palimpsest
- The bridge was shit, but those container ships are terrifying. Once I was on a ferry back into town, container ship stalled and was floating into our path.garbage

- I'm guessing shipping's fucked there too, right? Nothing can come in or out until that mess is dealt with.
Fucking critical infrastructure, eh?Nairn - 'i can't believe how easily it fell to bits'
you'd fall to bits if you were hit by 120,000 tons. bridges aren't designed to eat that kind of momentum.face_melter - lol. Peeps thinking the bridge was at fault here. The engineering of these things is remarkable, taking out 1 of the 2 supports is what brought it downGnash
- @Nairn I can bridge nerd on this. I live pretty much on the water, in between a few drawbridges and the second-most popular suicide bridge in the world. Fun!garbage
- This on was a continuous truss, and it's essentially a budget bridge used for shipping lanes and port entrances.garbage

"Taiwan hit by strongest quake in 25 years, four deaths reported"
"TAIPEI, April 3 (Reuters) - A 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan on Wednesday, the strongest tremor to hit the island in at least 25 years, killing four people, injuring dozens and sparking a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines that was later lifted.
Taiwan's government said four people had died in the mountainous, sparsely populated eastern county of Hualien near where the epicentre was, with more than 50 injured.

At least 26 buildings have collapsed, more than half in Hualien, though in one of the worst damaged ones 22 people were rescued with only one missing, the fire department said.
Taiwan television stations showed footage of buildings at precarious angles in Hualien, where the quake struck just offshore around 8am (0000GMT) as people were going to work and school.
The quake had a depth of 15.5km (9.6 miles), according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration."- only 4people died. all things considered, they're doing pretty good.pango

Everyone in Japan will be called Sato by 2531 unless marriage law changed, says professor
Sato will become the only option by 2531, suggests modelling as part of campaign to overturn outdated law requiring spouses to have same surname
https://www.theguardian.com/worl…
Japanese citizens will all have the same family name in 500 years’ time unless married couples are permitted to use separate surnames, a new study has suggested as part of a campaign to update a civil code dating back to the late 1800s.
The study, led by Hiroshi Yoshida, a professor of economy at Tohoku University, projected that if Japan continues to insist that couples select a single surname, every single Japanese person will be known as “Sato-san” by 2531.

An espionage scandal rocks Austria, laying bare alleged Russian spying operations across Europe
VIENNA — Austria faces its biggest espionage scandal in decades as the arrest of a former intelligence officer brings to light evidence of extensive Russian infiltration, lax official oversight and behavior worthy of a spy novel.
Egisto Ott was arrested March 29. The 86-page arrest warrant, obtained by The Associated Press, alleges among other things that he handed over cellphone data of former high-ranking Austrian officials to Russian intelligence, helped plot a burglary at a prominent journalist’s apartment, and wrote up “suggestions for improvement” after a Russian-ordered killing in Germany.

Botswana threatens to send 20,000 elephants to Germany in trophy hunting row
https://www.theguardian.com/worl…
The African leader argued that conservation efforts have led to an explosion in the number of elephants and that hunting is an important means to keep them in check. Botswana banned trophy hunting in 2014 but lifted the restrictions in 2019 under pressure from local communities. The country now issues annual hunting quotas.
Herds of elephants were causing damage to property, eating crops and trampling residents, Masisi told the German paper.
“It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana. We are paying the price for preserving these animals for the world,” he said.
Germans should “live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to”.
“This is not a joke,” said Masisi, whose country has seen its elephant population grow to some 130,000.
- Do any countries or elephant researchers have a clear idea of what the elephant population should actually be?utopian
