What Island? Kauai is the best. It rains a lot but if beautiful. Princeville area close to the bay
- Which island is the question; not sure yet... Many are saying Kauai...ideaist
- doesnotexist0
just asked my mom this, she was stationed there and used to run marathons on the islands.
she says Kauai. maui and kona are all touristy.
- Nice; "good hustle" to doesnotexist's mom; yeah, we want remote, not touristy... I think!ideaist
- KONA IS AWESOME FUCK YOU!kona
- FINE. god.doesnotexist
- oh you were talking about kona island. i'm sorry.kona

Wife and I went to Maui. It's beautiful. Lot to do there, but yes, it's very touristy.
- Did you stay on Maui the whole time or brand out at all? Where'd you stay? Thanks dirtyd...ideaist
- We were only there a week from the east coast, so didn't have time to go to any other islands.dirtydesign
- Stayed at the Marriott because we got a great deal. Decent place. Walked to restaurants and other hotels on the ocean.dirtydesign

I honeymooned on Kauai last June. It was totally awesome and amazing. I highly recommend it. Staying on the north shore (like Princeville) is the best. That part of the island is the most tropical. I know I was surrounded by tourists, but the entire time I was there it really never felt too touristy. Met some cool locals too, though some locals aren't as cool.

waikiki is very populated and touristy, but we found a lot of great things to do if you're into walking the nearby downtown to shops, eateries and what not. everything was very close to our hotel, which was the outrigger (super nice). pearl harbor is on the island as well as the road to hana (you gotta get up real early to make this trip, as later in the day it's too busy). also the Hanauma bay has the absolute best snorkeling. also north beach is on this island, and in december it will get some huge waves. when we were there dec 2-10th there was a large surf tournament going on.
maui was the opposite for us. we stayed in lahaina, which was much more off the beaten path. it was about a 15 min walk to some small shops, and a 5 min bus ride to the downtown shops, which were very small. not as many people and not as populated. you'd definitely need a jeep to get to the cool spots of the island.
kauai is very secluded. if you're really looking to get away and be alone and explore, this is your best option.
i preferred waikiki to be honest. as did my wife.
- Seclusion is our main goal; day of adventure/exploring and then a day of rest back and fourth for 10days-ish...ideaist
- If you want adventure / exploring Kauai has lots. Bring good hiking boots and a waterproof jacket.nocomply
- Hanauma bay had the best snorkeling 70 yrs ago. That place is beat down, If your'e going to Scuba past all the parking lot coral you might be ok.BH26

I lived there for 6 years.
If you want remote then any Island besides Oahu is good.
Although you could go remote while in Oahu too if you really want to explore the island, I could tell you the places to stay where you wouldn't run in to many tourists at all.
Really it's about staying away from Waikiki. I think everyone should see Oahu, it's very beautiful and there are more things to do than any other island.
Oahu must see:
Diamond Head windsurfers
Lanikai Beach (most pristine white sand beach on Island)
Drive the Kamehameha Highway to North Shore. (East Coast of Island)
Pineapple Fields
North Shore (Haleiwa, Waimea, Sunset)
Pali lookout
Stairway to Heaven (hiking trail)
Eat at Buzz's Steakhouse in Kailua
Sacred Falls State ParkDon't be jaded by the whole tourist thing. You will see Kalakaua Ave downtown (Wikiki strip) and then say, "OK, yeah I get it, this is the "kitchy" part of Hawaii." But if you have never been, it will be nice to walk the strip one night to see the history of the place, it's classic hotels, bars, restaurants and beaches and bazaars.
Mauai, Kauai, and Big Island are a completely diff experience from one another.
- Beyond excellent HijoDMaite; It's really overwhelming what Hawaii has to offer and we're just scratching the surface...ideaist
- google image the places i listed you won't be disappointed.HijoDMaite

We stayed in a rental home near turtle cove in Kauai. We walked out the back door down to the cove and it was full of sea turtle's in the am and in the evening, you could just get in the water and swim with them.
Kauai is a beautiful place.- May I ask how much the home was and for how long you had it ksv123?!ideaist

If you want very remote and you can swing it, there are 2 FourSeasons on Lana'i. You can really find gems on all the islands though. Great private rentals and B&B's away from the tourists. Each Island is unique. I personally really love the big island. Most love Maui and Kauai though. We always stay with family on Oahu and make a short trip to an outer island. Even Oahu has amazing things to do as Hijo said.

If you are going in November you have to see the big surf at the North Shore.
Average winter at pipeline:
super crowded some days but still fun to watch from the beach.Late November to December is when the Eddie Aikau invitation happens, it's kind of a zoo but way worth to be there, the ground shakes and rumbles as the sets get bigger and bigger.

The race is down to:
1. Oahu
2. Kauai; )

Kauai is very beautiful.
super great hiking and very, very clean beaches
the issue is that the most beautiful parts of the island are not really accessible by trails or vehicles, that's why a helicopter tour is very popular in Kauai. You can see the beauty and inaccessibility of the famour Napali coast in this vid:
hiking in Kauai
if you can get a helicopter ride through the

We did Oahu & Maui. Loved both... It's not too bad to island hop so you could stay one one island for it's experience (social/touristy) and then spend part of your time on another for it's experience (remote/less commercialized).

Went to Maui and Kauai in 2010 for 18 days. Best trip I've had in 10 years. Loved both islands for different reasons. Stayed in Kihei town in Maui and Wailua in Kauai but we ran around both islands so much that we were not really anchored to our condos. They were mainly a place to put our heads down when we were exhausted from hiking, kayaking, surfing or swimming.
We tried to live as locally as possible by renting condos and buying groceries for lunch and some dinners. We tried to treat the vacation in a backpacking style as opposed to a resort style.
There is so much to do in both places if you are up for adventure. Rent a car for the whole time you are there. You can get smoking deals from Hotwire.
Maui - Hike Haleakalā for sure. Leave at about 3 am to drive up the mountain to start and see the house of the rising sun. Frickin breathtaking. Road to Hana was really cool and the black sand beaches near hana provide another hiking an swimming opportunity. Swim and snorkel anywhere off the shore in South Maui and you will be chillin with the Honu (turtles) and manta rays. Take a snorkeling trip to Molokini to see more crazy sea life. We got surf lessons from a guy named Maui (funny I know). He only does small groups (1-4 people or so) and runs a place called Da Beach House http://www.dabeachhousemaui.com/…
Kauai - Kayak the Napali coast. must must must do. You can hike it too. Both are challenging depending on the time of year but sooo worth while. Kayak inland to secret falls. Get a guide. Po'Ipu is more touristy but nice for beach days and sunbathing beside sea lions that just decide to occupy part of the beach (they're part of the 99% too I think).
I honestly have to say that I didn't want to leave. I wanted to find to immigrate there with my girlfriend and start over. All I have to say is Aloha is a real thing.
- Excellent insight and mirroring what we hop to do on our journeys... Thanks scrap...ideaist

Oh hey, one other thing. If you go to Kauai, and you like steak, there is a local restaurant in Kapaa called "The Bull Shed". Must do. When you go make sure to order "Sludge" with your steak. It is a wicked garlic sauce they make and mostly only locals know about it.
- We're vegetarian, but have agreed that wherever we go we eat as the locals eat for honeymoon only...ideaist
- Ah! You shouldn't have an issue finding good veggie eats too. Sounds silly but the BEST pineapple I've eer hadscrap_paper
