Finding the right neighborhood is priority. I am moving by myself and wounldnt rule out a roommate, but would prefer not. I can't afford Beverly Hills, but something reasonable would be good.
Looking for a safe, interesting area. Somethings to walk to for shopping, coffee, maybe a gallery would be nice.

Hollywood is a no for living. Lots of nicer places in LA. Silver Lake has pockets of nice and pockets of sketch. Atwater Village is just east of Silver Lake/ Los Feliz, it's nice and can be a little cheaper but you're closer to Glendale. I just started a new job in Santa Monica and I think I'm in love. It's gorgeous, clean, nice weather everyday. Inland can get really, really HOT for most of the year. Make sure your place has central A/C as most do not. Only downside with SM is the cost of apartment/homes. Culver City is nice too but the rents are moving up.

Sounds like Abbott Kinney is the place. No love for Silverlake.
- AK (street) is a shopping area, lots of foot and car traffic in the areaalbums
- Abbott Kinney is the place if you're settled down, or want stay within a circle of people that are monotonous. If you want a more progressive lifestyle, the eastside is where it's at. No Angeleno will be able to disagree with that.twooh
- progressive lifestyle, the eastside is where it's happening, and will happen for many years to come.twooh

I don't have a job yet which makes it difficuly.
Venice is nice, but is it better than Hollywood? Is the commute easy from one to the other?

Venice is nice if you're into the tourists all around you (if living by the beach) and of course the ever present V13 based out of Oakwood. Santa Monica would be more my speed next time around methinks.

where are you coming from? what do you expect? do you want hollywood or do you want a beach? two totally different areas/vibes.
no job is fine as long as you have some freelance to back you up...or savings...or daddy's credit card...which would make you fit right in.

abbott kinney is about 2-4 blocks from the beach. venice has probably the trendier restaurants and bars on the west side.
gay neighbourhood? nah. weho has more of a gay scene i think.
yes the commute is easy but who wants to drive 40 mins everyday.
