Because it isn't well supported by browsers.

SVG seem faster on loading? Can you explain more about the rendering?

SVG would sure solve the issues with the different pixel densities on iPad

Why not have a plug-in to display vector graphics, that all browsers could use, so it would be that same across teh interwebz. Let it run scripts, too.

1) Lack of browser support (IE 8 and below don't support it)
2) No good IDE for animation
3) Most sites don't really need complex vector animation. Same reason why Flash is not missed that much except for video.

I would like to do just regular site in all vector. I think it would look pretty snappy done in the right style.

Isn't there a way around the IE8 issues?

Few years ago I played around with this http://raphaeljs.com/ and considered using it for an app I was producing that needed graphs and charts.
It works in older IE, the only downside was the text rendering was not consistent between browsers.

good idea, often not very good execution... and mainly because logos in SVG tended to take a second or so to load, or blink while loading... thus causing the suits to freak out, as the logo is all that matters(!)... and all but the most ideologically pure designer to use a more eye-friendly-all-around file format...
some notes...
