I would normall post this in the sci-fi book thread, but I think it's so good that it deserves its own.
As a long-time sci-fi fan, I'm always on the lookout for a great book to read in the genre, but they're far and few between. On top of a great sci-fi concept, in order to be great, it also has to employ great writing and characters. Isaac Asimov, Heinlein and Vonnegut (amongst many others) were great at this and have gone down in history as the great sci-fi authors. I think we have a new addition: Hugh Howey.
Hugh Howey wrote a short story called Wool just under a year ago. He self-published this novelette and developed a quick and strong following. With encouragement from fans, he wrote several more books in the series over the last few months. These have been released as a single book entitled Wool Omnibus.
Of the current 690 Amazon reviews, 618 are 5 star. I couldn't resist, so I bought a copy. They aren't wrong. If you're a sci-fi fan, buy this now, you won't be disappointed.

- I haven't, but I will if you recommend it. Seriously, try Wool, it's mind-blowingly good.monospaced
- i'll look it up- always on the hunt for more books. tunnel was entertaining in a cheap sort of way. not his bestbjladams

i prefer fiction. "most sci-fi" book i've read recently was 'Oryx & Craik' by Margeret Atwood, but i'm always keen to try something if it comes highly recommended. this does looks interesting, despite the cover...
- the other cover art:

BTW - No hate here posted towards monospaced, I am shocked!
- I hope there isn't. I didn't write the books or anything. Just sharing something that I think will go down in history as great.monospaced

I'm 60% through the Wool Omnibus (well into the 4th book) and my position still stands: this book (series?) is getting better. Reads a lot like a great television series (I know, that's not exactly a good thing to say), the way it has cliffhangers at the end of each book and chapter. The pace is steady and the mystery builds. Still highly recommended.

Digital books are alright, but printed, signed copies are much cooler. Just ordered mine; got my little piece of history.

Scott Free got the rights. Tony Scott and Ridley Scott are turning it into a project.
