if you put an ipad in a aluminum case —about 1/8" thick, hole for screen only — would you expect it to impact wi-fi performance?

iPad is pretty much already in an aluminum case—about 1/8" thick with a hole for the screen only and the wi-fi is decent.

It will depends on how you hold it. If Wi-FI suffers, don't hold it like that.

yes, 1 antenna is placed right behind the apple logo (the bit that is not aluminium on the case), you would block its optimal performance.
though you would still have some reception from the screen side.
