I have a client with a $2600 invoice 307 days overdue. Project was launched over 1 year ago. She occasionally writes me, interested in addressing some final edits, then falls off the face of the earth.
How much of this invoice would you insist she pay down before work resumes? How would you present it to her?

She's asking for an admin password so that she can peruse for final edits, but I'm inclined to not even give her that until $.

Yeah, she needs to pay first. How much access does she have to the work for final edits? Simply let her know you can accept it in two payments and she will receive the password after she pays her first payment (half)

After 307 days I'd be taking her to small claims court. That amount of time is pretty excessive. Stop being a pussy and be firm about it. Sound like she's just calling to keep you pacified.
Create some legal-looking papers and scare her into paying you. Make that shit look official. Put your county's seal at the top of it.

100%. End.

And why would you want to keep working with someone like that?? She obviously isn't paying you. Your next invoice with her will probably be paid 3 years from now!

I don't want to keep working with her. I want to get paid and cover whatever minimal edits remain to make it clean. But I'd settle for just getting paid.

- Not design related. Just making the point, that as a designer, you can create some convincing-looking documents.CanHasQBN

- Well... just don't present this kind of stuff to a judge or anything.CanHasQBN
- Font choice for body copy is important. Something monospaced always looks legit.CanHasQBN

I'd be changing the uploaded copy for Lorem Ipsum liberally interspersed with Client Name owes me $2600.

I worry about your business if you continue to pander to clients who don't pay for nearly a year. Ridiculous.

She maybe wants access so that she can get her 12yo nephew to download the site and finish it off in Word so she doesn't have to pay you. //
Get half payment from her (at least) before giving her access.
Then get the remainder when she wants to put it live.If YOU owed this amount to ANY company for this time they'd have had you in court already. Get on the case man!

Definitely time to put your foot down on the delinquent client.
Letting this kind of thing slide hurts all freelancers, not just yourself.

Get everything she owes you and don't do or discuss anything related to the project until then.

ask yourself this, how would a plumber deal with invoicing/payments?

To people who suggest getting half payment before releasing the password... What makes you believe that she'll pay the other half after getting the password?

What... you trying to say you're doing it for the money and not because you love doing it? That's dedication, holmes!

Ask for the payment and give an a power user keeping the general admin for yourself. If the client doesn't pay forward their site to a competitor and call it a day.
Or live their site with an overly obscene image that would make her lose business. If you hurt her in the wallet she may start thinking in paying for your services.
I mean, think about it... would you go to a restaurant, leave without paying and go next day for breakfast?
