looking for recommendations for graphic novels. it's something i've never really been into - but i need to study how they work.
i've already looked thru the comic book thread, but from what i can gather, a comic and a graphic novel seem to be different beasts. (perhaps i'm wrong)
also, anything that is outside of the usual character illustrations would be good. something that has it's own style. i've looked some thru the walking dead, and i like that. i've come across Maus too, that looks great.
the best example so far that i've found is Oh No! by Dan Santat - seems a very unique way of telling stories.
i'm sure i'll end up at the books store, gathering stuff on my own - but i'd appreciate any insight before i head that way - things i could look out for...
cheers.

generally a graphic novel is just a collection of an entire run of comics in one volume so you don't have to derp about collecting issues

Anything by Warren Ellis.

- Ben Templesmith can be an acquired taste for some people. I wouldn't recommend this for someone just getting into comics.DRIFTMONKEY

thanks, there some great looking stuff above. adding them to the list.
i guess i'll be needing to gather quite a few styles and genres - to help get a grip on how these things unfold a story appropriately.also, below is the style i'll be working in - if it sparks something else anyone can think of that i should look into, let me know. I realize it's really "comic-booky" which is why i'm looking for stuff that's heavily stylized.

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, a truly amazing comicbook about comics.
The art, the structure, the psychology... Required reading for everyone into comics and really entertaining.http://www2.fredosphere.com/imag…
The follow-up "Reinventing Comics" is good too.
- Such a good book and its a great basis for just art and communication in general.inhaler97
