Thanks CanHAsQBN!
I was reading ATT policies and roaming fees are pretty high at nearly $1.50 a min with data is roughly $19 a MB if you can believe that!
Will look into sim cards and possibly taking an old 3GS I have laying around instead.

If it is locked to AT&T it doesn't mean you won't be able to use it in Europe, only that you won't be able to get a disposable local sim card with a number, which is usually cost-effective for local calls and internet.
You can easily get AT&T to unlock it I heard.

If it's locked to AT&T you can pick up a pay as you go phone for next to nothing. In fact you could probably ask a stranger on the street for one, everyone has about 5 phones in their bed side locker (old nokia's etc). Find a trift store (oxfam) if you can't get one. Then just pop into vodaphone and pick up a sim card for $15 (pre loaded with $15 credit or so).
Wayyyyyyyy cheaper than roaming.

get a pre-paid card, works fine.

That might work assuming I can just get a card and use current US iphone?
Will GSM band work in multiple countries?
Have read they require a new sim in order to work.

hm, not familiar with specifics of US versions, or at&t
all i know is on last berlin trip the international folk (from za + nl) who also worried about connectivity with their iphones pulled pre-paid sim cards from vending machine in hotel lobby and were good.

I think ATT iPhones are locked to the carrier, but I'm not sure. Might want to look into unlocking it before you leave, then a pre-paid sim should be fine. You might want to shut off data, though. I used Orange and it was about 4 euros each time I connected to the internet.

I think iPhone is considered a "World" phone.
I was Europe last Autumn and my AT&T iPhone 4 would automatically connect to whatever local service there was in that country. The person I was with had an iPhone with Verizon, and their phone was not working at all. But I was receiving and making calls from/to the USA all the time. It worked perfectly without me having to do anything. There was no fee. If there was, it was so small that I didn't even notice it in my bill.
You should make sure with AT&T, as things change all the time.
