Not certain on this, but I'm pretty sure the Swiss are required a rifle by law after undergoing a year of full time military service and training.

They are permitted to have one rifle - A Sig550 and they are not allowed to take it out of their home. Some time in the last 10 years the law changed as well, so they couldn't carry ammunition. You had to get it from an armory if the country were called to war or a state of emergency.

The Swiss have a lot of guns but they are still heavily controlled - Much more so than the US. Their regulation is actually a lot closer to the archaic 'Right to bear arms' bollocks that gets spewed around.

The general trend is that the less guns there are, the less innocent deaths there are.

I enjoy target shooting as a sport but don't see why people who genuinely enjoy shooting for that reason can't adapt to shooting BBs, for instance, or simulation.

Question for the pro-gun people - Do you genuinely believe that gun control will increase deaths of innocent people?

    • i believe that my gun is a recreational device i share plenty of time with my friends with, to us it's not a weaponalbums
    • The Swiss are some of the most civilized people in the world. I trust them w/ guns.hotroddy
    • Albums, why do you have a gun that can kill instead of a BB gun?orrinward2
    • better accuracy. bb guns can't stay true over distancealbums
    • Heat-seeking missiles are even more accurate. FYI bums.

True, Fox News and Neo-Con spam email letters don't mention this part.

Also, please don't compare the Swiss to Americans. It's insulting to the Swiss.

    • I agree. I was pointing out that the frequently-cited comparisons of 'Hey the Swiss have guns and don't die so it's fine for us' are rather flawed.orrinward2

for orrinward2, did you suggest i use a bb gun for safety's sake?
    because: http://www.wral.com/news/local/s…
Second child killed in pellet gun accident

    • I thought I told you I don't care.albums

    • BBs and pellets are also very different. A pellet is pointed and and designed to fire like a bullet (spinning to maintain velocity/accuracy)orrinward2
    • velocity and accuracy)orrinward2
    • So that's two children killed by BB guns. How many have been killed by bullets?
      ********
  • orrinward20

Yes, for safety's sake. Any force projectile is dangerous but not nearly as dangerous as a gun with to-kill ammo.

It's a lot harder to kill 20 children with BB's than it is with 9mm rounds.

    http://www.nwemail.co.uk/home/ba…

That's the most recent ball-bearing gun incident I could find in the press. A 12 year old girl was shot from a passing car and she hurt her neck. That's a headline in the 'Shooting of the Day UK' thread.

    • my point was improper use of anything can result in death, even a pellet gun. education over legislation i sayalbums
    • But what is the proper use of a 9mm handgun? What does a glock do 'recreationally' that a bb handgun can't?orrinward2
    • But it's easier to cause death with improper use of something that is intended to cause death than something that is intended for recreation, no?
      ********
    • for recreation, no?

Hey wait a second... do the Swiss use those Sig rifles to shoot all the holes in the cheese? That's effin' brilliant.

    • No because they aren't allowed ammunition, because of the dangers.orrinward2

I dont think the violence is going to stop, Its going to be one idiot copy cat and one false flag after another and when you final reached the point of satisfactory enslavement there will be another line crossed.

so keep bending over and praying because The answer to your question for the violence is same as your answer to the question for what would stop fascism in a country.

    • False flag? So you think these attacks were caused by the governmentqoob

Seems that gun lobbyists are devious organisations in any country, as we discovered in Australia today:

It is actually the disgusting worm of racism coming from the pro-gun-ists at the end of the day, isn't it? 'We need guns because the minorities who we've been killing /enslaving/degrading/exploiting since we came here as a colonial/cultural white luftwaffe will kill us if we don't have guns to defend ourselves.' Nothing has changed. And that goes for the global US colonialism too.

    • And, as always, I am NOT lumping all Americans, most of whom are wonderful, in with that summary.

Washington Post-ABC News Poll on Gun Control

Do you favor or oppose stricter gun control laws in this country?

    Favor 54%
    Oppose 43%

Would you support or oppose a law requiring a nationwide ban on:
High-capacity ammunition clips, meaning those containing more than 10 bullets

    Support 59%
    Oppose 38%

Semi-automatic handguns, which automatically re-load every time the trigger is pulled

    Support 52%
    Oppose 44%

The sale of handguns, except to law enforcement officers

    Support 27%
    Oppose 71%

    • Polls are bullshit. jeez mr facts man. only polls that are trustworthy are in strip clubs lolyurimon
  • qoob0

Political and ideological differences, in particular, are stark: Stricter gun control overall is favored by 74 percent of Democrats but just 29 percent of Republicans; it’s 52 percent among independents, more than half for the first time since 2007. Support, similarly, is 72 percent among liberals and 58 percent among moderates, vs. 38 percent among conservatives.

  • melq0

I wonder how those numbers break down with percentages of people that actually have gun knowledge? My issue is not with the discussion of gun laws. It's with the strong arguments by people that don't seem to have much information on what they are arguing about.

For example: "Make all semi-automatic weapons illegal." The term 'semi-automatic' is very specific and defines a mechanical operation within the firearm. Any handgun that isn't a single-shot or revolver is semi-automatic. Does anyone really believe that nearly every handgun in America should be illegal? Do they realize that a revolver fires every time you pull the trigger, just like a semi-automatic pistol does?

Many people want the Assault Weapons Ban reinstated. The issue is that, defined by the former ban, an "assault weapon" is categorized purely by cosmetic items: an adjustable stock; a pistol grip; etc.. These features don't make a rifle more deadly, just ugly.

An intelligent proposal would be to ban semi-automatic rifles. That would at least show that people understood the nature of both the problem they are trying to correct and the object they blame.

I'm not for a ban on semi-automatic rifles, by the way, but such a proposal would at least convince me that people were taking the subject seriously and not just saying, "That gun looks scary! Why does anyone need a gun that looks scary!?"

    • Yes, I believe nearly every handgun should be illegal, actually.hereswhatidid
    • An intelligent proposal would be not wanting small arms capable of killing 10 people without a reload, no?hereswhatidid
    • I guess we could do everything but deal with core issues of real problems.yurimon
    • Removing the primary means of mass killings is avoiding the problem?hereswhatidid
    • Thanks for proving my point, fellows. It's a timely reminder to not even bother with the discussion here.melq
    • Your point is that unless we agree to not consider any ban on guns you don't want to discuss it? Seems reasonable.hereswhatidid
    • All guns should be banned, which is an intelligent proposalinstrmntl
    • disposable guns is the answer.. single fire, one shot units.ebertzjaw
    • all rifles should have 9ft barrels... harder to conceal.ebertzjaw
