When I edit a large file in PS the whole machine slows down to a crawl even after closing the file and/or closing PS.
Obviously more RAM would help but Ive never had these problems so bad before - things normally return to normal after leaving the app.
Is there a tool or free app for flushing the memory properly or stopping the scratch disk after PS or other app closes?

First use Activity Monitor to see if it's a memory problem in the first place.
- "First use" then "in the first place."i_was

Low disk space will diffidently slow you down, so will being connected to multiple external hard disks.
