Hello,
A group of 5-8 of us are looking to spend Christmas and NYE in Scotland (or Ireland) but I'm not sure where to start as an itinerary. 22nd December - January 2nd.
Has anyone done either before as a holiday?
We're more looking for good nightlife than sightseeing, and I've heard Hogmanay for NYE is awesome.
We'll be hiring a car so getting around won't be too difficult, and happy to just do Scotland if Ireland and Scotland in the timeframe is too tight / means too much traveling.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I have only visited Ireland, and only in the summer, so I therefore suggest Ireland.

dryeat, I'm guessing you've done Hogmanay before? Do you have any suggestions on what to do for a week before that in Scotland?

There's Loads of good food and pubs in Edinburgh, and plenty to sight see but u prob want to look for a cottage somewhere up north for a few days and get trashed?
Theres not really a lot to do in Scotland in the winter.

Cottages wil prob be exspensive tho'

On my first NYE in Dublin I was surprised to find out pubs closed as normal, at 1am.

like mg33, I have only been to Ireland, so I therefore suggest Scotland.

Hogmanay is fun, but you need to get accommodation sorted like NOW. And if it rains, well, the whole event kind of sucks...

ireland doesn't typically "Do" NYE and as far as I know it's only in the last few years that dublin city council have planned festival type activities. It has always been just a night of paying into packed pubs so most people with sense have crazy house parties.
I've never been there but I believe Edinburgh have always made an effort so I'd suggest going there

Edinburgh over Dublin any day. Have never been for Hogmanay but friends have and always had a great time. Finding a place to stay, as others have said, will be hard or expensive.
