What is the best tool to connect an iMac to a TV?
What if the TV doesn't have an HDMI port?

it depends on iMac model and tv...
Most likely if its a newer tv you could go with one of the mac adapters to DVI/VGA into the tv. If not there is an adapter for almost all mac's to get an S-Video and RCA out of the display port.

or use Apple TV?

I thought Apple TV would be the ticket here — you can now mirror your display to it.
I fact I have been looking in to this myself — what is the story with colour accuracy on TVs? Are there any specific models worth looking at? thanks
- I do it all the time. Color accuracy on my Samsung is incredible.monospaced

Display Mirroring is only available on the newest iMacs with Mountain Lion. Plus, there's a lag because it's sending everything via wi-fi.

Otherwise, just buy any old adapter for your iMac model. Anything from mini-display ports to the new thunderbolt, there are so many options it's not even funny. You can output to DVI, mini DVI, HDMI, RGB, etc. just with adapters.
